In Australia, most high schools begin at either grade 7 or 8. So yes, 12 is the average age to start high-school here. I started at 13.

yes it would seem many countries have high school as last 6-7 years of education (against half of them being middle school and half high school like in USA)

For me primary (I guess some call it middle) school was 8 years, high school was 5 years. Although many schools have 7 years for primary and 6 for high.
