"Downloads for 3D-printed Liberator gun reach 100,000

The blueprint used to produce a 3D-printed plastic gun has been downloaded about 100,000 times since going online earlier this week, according to Forbes.

Defense Distributed told the news site it was surprised by the amount of interest its Liberator gun had generated.

Earlier in the week, the company demonstrated the firearm being fired

But even before any more guns come off the DIY printing presses, there are moves afoot to ban it.

Metal detectors
Californian senator Leland Yee said he wanted a law passed to stop the manufacture of 3D-printed guns.

"I plan to introduce legislation that will ensure public safety and stop the manufacturing of guns that are invisible to metal detectors and that can be easily made without a background check," he said in a statement.

According to Defense Distributed, most of the 100,000 downloads have been in the US, followed by Spain, Brazil, Germany and the UK.

The blueprint has also been uploaded to file-sharing site the Pirate Bay, where it has become the most popular file in the site's 3D-printing category.

Firing pin
It took Defense Distributed eight months to produce the firearm, which was assembled from separate components produced on an $8,000 (£5,000) 3D printer bought from auction site eBay.

While downloading the blueprints may not be illegal, any UK citizen who made and owned such a handgun could face arrest, according to the UK's Metropolitan Police.

"To actually manufacture any type of firearm in the UK, you have to be a registered firearms dealer (RFD)," it said in a statement.

"Therefore, unless you are an RFD, it would most definitely be an offence to make a gun using the blueprints. It may be legal for an RFD to manufacture a gun this way, as long as they had the necessary authorities."

One of the biggest headaches for law enforcers is the fact the gun is made from plastic - with only the firing pin made from metal.

New York congressmen Steve Israel and Chuck Schumer have sponsored legislation aimed at adding a 3D-printing provision to the US Undetectable Firearms Act, which requires all guns to be detectable."

With other words, you can download a file on the computer and print it out on a 3D printer.
This will grant you with a plastic firearm which is as lethal as any other firearm
If you ask me, this can not end well in any way, as anyone is able to download these files.

Yes and now the US Government is 'trying' to remove the download for it.

Indeed, however it keeps getting reuploaded to torrent communities all over again and his encrypted site.

Exactly whenever the US Government tries to step in it just makes the problem 10x worse as more people get intrigued by what it is and it continues to be circulated. Once the copy has been shared between two people it is basically uncontrollable from that point. Welcome to the internet Obama. Try and stop them.

Someone I was talking to today said that the guy plans on putting some metal in them to prevent malicious people from sneaking them past metal detectors, but wants to eventually perfect the weapon so he can effectively change the firearms market into fair play for all. I'm not sure how this would affect the current "beta design" download of it, but it is definitely interesting to see, as the gun is completely legal by definition.

He can't put metal in them because they're not even weapons when he puts them up for download, but files.
3D printers use plastic and the guns will therefor be able to sneak past any detector.
And I can't see how a firearm that can instantaneously kill a man is legal.

I am really amazed on how human technology evolved. Imagine printing your 3D food in 3013.

1. I mean in terms of design, he can require it for the gun to work, should he choose to do so. Again, these are just rumors I've heard, though. I'm not saying they are fact.

2. The point of the idea is to make it legal to own for everyone who can safely have it, which would bypass the pretty ridiculous and highly-varying laws that are all over the country itself. The general idea is that if everyone is "packing heat", and everyone else knows the guy they are about to commit a crime against probably has a gun, they will more than likely not commit the crime knowing that they have just lost their advantage.
Same goes for those in self-defense scenarios. With crime rising and police unable to respond to most 911 calls now, people are often seeking new ways to protect themselves when then police can't do it for them. In a society where only *some* people have guns and others don't, you get an unfair balance which leads to those with the advantage misusing it. Make everyone equal and you greatly reduce that. Obviously criminals don't follow laws, (hence their name), so taking away all weapons isn't really an option, but giving a gun to all those who can safely handle it would be a balance that is more possible in our world. (Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world, else removing all guns worldwide would work.)

I'll try to avoid getting into a political discussion on this, but I'm sure you get the idea of where I'm going with this. I do agree, though, that it will likely need some sort of method of preventing criminals, psychopaths, and untrained people/children from obtaining it.
