When running multiple applications, all crash

Hey guys.

Like the title says, when I'm running multiple applications at once (steam, skype, GTA:SA/Red Orchestra 2, firefox, and some other programs, they all tend to crash at once, randomly. There's not much more to it, they just crash, and it's really annoying, as you can probably imagine.

Changes I made to my system recently include: switching from the regular audio output to SPDIF (optical output on motherboard); getting rid of all the dust by cleaning the case with compressed air.

What I tried to do:

Take out RAM and switch their positions (dual channel 4x2GB).
Defrag HDD.

I think it may be my HDD dying, not sure...

On-topic: Define 'crash'. Do the apps just close down? Or BSOD? Or computer reboots or what?

It's just the applications that crash.

''This program isn't working anymore.''
''Firefox has closed down, want to restart?''
''Skype doesn't work anymore.''

No BSOD, Windows Explorer stays active, just the big applications crashing at the same time.

Can you state some specific information about your system, such as OS version, RAM, Video card?

Windows has a built in utility to view errors such as program crashes. If you open up your start menu in Win7, type event and click the Event Viewer (NL: Logboeken/Gebeurtenislogboeken weergeven). Try locating your crashes there, and post the data associated with it.

So your system is locking up completely when under load, possible Page File issues when the system tries to use some of the hard drive as page file if your Ram is under load..
Possibly a faulty hard drive itself, but then it could crash to a BSOD or Explorer itself would also freeze up and crash..

If these fail, try to do a RAM test. A good option would be memtest86, look from Google for it. Just install it on a USB stick, boot from USB and let it run 2-3 full tests. If no errors show up, then....errr....we look further.

After the error check, things seem to have gotten slightly worse; more crashes like the ones I described in the first post. Im probably getting an SSD and use this HDD for storage.

How's the operating temperatures of the CPU and GPUs? Nothing out of the ordinary?

If I may suggest. Install Linux and try running Steam games that work on Linux, browser etc at the same time (similar to what you do on windows) and see if they crash too.
If you have no games that has a native linux client on Steam, you can try installing Saubraten, which is a fairly decent 3D graphics FPS game for Linux that runs natively, it's not "OMFG THESE GRAPHICS ARE AWESUM", but it is to add stress to the graphics card to effectivly stress test the system while running a completely other operating system.

This is to rule out if it's the operating system installation itself (windows in this case)/(or windows registry, can be many things) that is faulty, or if it is the hardware.

If the applications do not crash while in a Linux Enviroment, you can almost rule out hardware problems (not completely tough, all hardware still needs to be tested).

Just did an error check on my HDD, it took two hours. After booting up, I tried to start Firefox, and it crashed just like it did as I described earlier; ouch.  :hit:

Nothing out of the ordinary at all. I make sure my hardware runs at safe temperatures.

Reason unknown, but there were error codes. I will check again tomorrow.

Thank you very much for the advice, but I'm unable to install Linux because I don't have any partition to install it on, and can't make one either.

I'm bumping this topic for Salmonella.The situation is getting really annoying.Every time he copy-pastes something he crashes.Urgent need for help!

Also,an 8GB RAM was replaced today with a different 4GB RAM.
The same problem existed before and after the change though.

It must be down to a Windows fault, when you copy and paste something it uses the "clipboard" to temporarily store the data to be transferred.
Perhaps try repairing your Windows with the disk?

Considered running a registry cleaning program? It could be a cause of your troubles.
