Ok, an 8 year old was playing GTA and had access to a firearm, yet a shitstorm will not come towards GTA V and GTA series in particular, saying how it is encouraging criminal behaviour and so on. I wonder what is the problem, GTA or the parenting.

Both, and the gun.

The fact that the gun was easily accessible to the child is the real problem here. The fact that he was playing GTA is totally irrelevant. I've been playing GTA ever since I was 7 and I don't really recall murdering anyone.

It is the gun owner's responsibility for keeping guns secured. They failed, and they will have to suffer the consequences.

This is the parents' fault, alone. Guns is not a factor here, same can be applied if the kid were playing with matches.

Where must we go... we who wander this Wasteland in search of our better selves?

I'm laughing at your attempt to defend a horrible system.
Guns are indeed a problem. If there were no guns there would be no dead grandma.
I was just waiting for a foolish patriot to say that it's just bad hiding and that guns are great.

So I mean.. what do you do if you get viciously attacked out on the street?

I don't do anything because I don't live in America.
The retarded system caused good and bad to have possession over guns. Good people carry them to protect themselves from the bad people, and incidents like these occur. Bad people carry them to achieve their goals, because they legally can.

Back to your question, I wouldn't get viciously attacked. Where I live people barely have knives and weaponry is extremely hard to come by. If someone does get hold of a weapon he won't use it to rob a random dude.

Yeah so, basically what you're saying is if you live in a country where the criminals are armed with clubs, knives, and potentially guns - it would be wise to have a gun for yourself?

No.
Maybe this sounds far fetched but when a man gets upset, angry or whatever, he can use the weapon for bad things easily, like murder.
And obviously if it isn't hidden in a safe that only the owner has access to, incidents like mentioned in the OP can occur. This is not the first incident.
But people wouldn't even have to defend themselves if guns weren't legal.

What would you recommend to an American, who is at constant danger from street gangs and deranged people?

I see 2 options.
1. Move outside of the ghetto. I'm sure that not everywhere in the whole USA there is danger lurking on the streets as if it is GTA.
2. If for some reason you don't want to / can not move, and you feel threatened, get a gun and absolutely restrict access from anyone but yourself.

Obviously option 2 isn't ideal because as I said, sadness or anger can cause one to go insane and go on killing sprees.
