Hello there guys,
So, inspired by the video that will be linked below, I will try to ditch a smartphone in a favor of an old, Nokia X2-01 phone:
I will keep you updated with how the experiment is going and if this wonderful brand is yet obsolete.
Now, first impressions after getting back on that phone.
It's still far from obsolete. I've discovered that the GPRS network still works fine, and it somehow manages to work faster than the 3G on my older smartphones. I've discovered that the app store is pretty much obsolete since Nokia shut it down, however, it's replaced by an intergrated appstore of the Opera mobile browser, which comes as a default browser with the phone. There you can install any apps that Symbian supports. I've managed to successfully install Messenger and Facebook on it and it works relatively fine. I noticed that all the new features available in smartphones were ported to the Symbian versions as well. I guess that's because a lot of people in third world countries still use symbian phones due to their affordable pricing. Also, WhatsApp is also still available for this phone, it's that I don't use it so I didn't install it. No Skype for it, tho.
As I said, I am still astonished by how well the GPRS service still works in our country.
Now this is one of the reasons I loved Nokia phones - the music quality.
For such an old phone, it produces unbelievable music quality, especially if you use headphones. I was never able to get this kind of quality and bass out of any of the previous smartphones I owned. This is a great pro for me as when going for a run, music is my best friend. I had problems getting decent audio quality through my headphones when using my old Android device.
Messaging. Oh man I miss physical keyboards. As you see, this one has a full one. And the texting expierence is a lot better. I never got accustomed to the touch screen keyboards. Maybe because I grew up with an old Nokia X6 that was a touch screen phone, but it had the oldschool numerical keyboard when it came to texting.
The camera? Well, it has a 0.3 MP camera. It's a joke compared to todays standarts. You wouldn't do any professional photography with this thing. However, I find it that if you see something that you really need to take that pic of, the quality is still bearable. Here is my hipster food pic made with the phone:
(https://scontent-frt3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/wl/t34.0-12/1509017_1290679594292434_7734244946642199352_n.jpg?oh=36888a56722da7de990ec683de9e62aa&oe=56E4D83C).
Battery life after so many years is still great. It was used by my mother before for like five years, and then laid in the closet untouched for another five. I took it out - fired it up, and it still has two bars of battery! That's Nokia phones for you! If only Nokia wouldn't have sold themselves out to Microsoft and decided to switch to Android...
Oh, this phone has a SD card slot. I can still use my 7GB music library in this , which is cool.
The particular reason why I decided to take part in this is because of reliability of the old phones when it comes to texting or making calls (even the most high end smartphone can start misbehaving when you really need to make that call) and a moral side. I am very saddened when during breaks in our school, most people are burried in their phone screens instead of socialising. Also, I've noticed just how much of the smartphone functionality I simply do not use..
So, I'll be using this for a while. If you got any questions, ask. I'll keep you updated on how it's going.
Oh, and if you're gonna start commenting smartass BS on how stupid this is and such, just stay away. If you have nothing constructive to add, keep it to yourself.
Now, the video I talked about.

Another picture quality update. Ofcourse, not something you'd upload to your Instagram feed to satisfy your hipster-needs, but still, pretty usable for FB Messenger interactions I'd say.

I usually leave my smartphone at home while I work or when I'm out and the true thing is that you get so much more done. The only time I use my phone is when I'm home doing nuddin' and pretty much browsing around. If more people actually let their phone be off or home while working or interacting with one another, things'd be much more ambitious and open-eyed.
The only thing I rather need my smartphone for is the GPS system while traveling. Other than that I only bring my camera along.
Nice topic, Ry!

COME ON, LEAVE YOUR CELLY!
I feel so old. I even started to like crossword puzzle. :(

Thank you for your replies guys.
Anyhow, Day 2 with a Dumb Phone: The urge to constantly check my phone still exists, despite the fact that there's nothing there! It has no snapchat, no instagram, no twitter! Come on!
I almost had an urge to go ahead and shove my simcard back into my smartphone, but then I stopped and asked myself - and why exactly do I need it ? What is there mendatory that I use apart from pointlessly scrolling through instagram or facebook to stalk my friends or celebrities? I already spend a lot of time infront of my computer as it is, do I really need another screen to look at after I get up from my computer?
-
The bad thing in using old phones is if your battery for example breaks, you can not find anyone selling a replacement for it, you will have to buy another phone with its battery.

Yes, but that's very unlikely, because there isn't much that can drain your battery in the first place. After all, this is Nokia we're talking about, I don't think that'd be much of a problem.
But even in case you're right, I am set - I have 5 old phones laying around in my closet: an old flip-phone samsung, a Nokia 3310, some other Nokia and the one I'm using right now. So I'm all set.
-
Seems entertaining enough, keep us updated Ry.

You might die after a week hahaha. This looks cool mate!

Update:
Ease of calling or texting someone.
I had almost forgot how convenient it was to text or call someone on a simple phone due to their primary design being exactly that. smartphones nowadays seem to be designed for everything but calling or texting, and in an emergency they can really screw you up. I remember the problems I had with iPhone 4S when it would suddenly get stuck on a call screen and become completely unresponsive. If I was somewhere far from home and I needed an emergency, or let's say a ride, I'd be fucked. Now with these simple phones, not only do I have a week+ of battery life, but reliability for the phone to do what it's intended to do.
Absence of constant ding ding annoyances.
When on my smartphone, I'd keep receiving all those irrelevant notifications I really do not care about, such as all the GMAIL spam (I only get emailed by Nigerian prince and Apple wanting to tell me that I won an iPhone) or somebody replying to my sarcastic youtube comment. These distractions are not present on my trusty Nokia.

Day 4.... The phone is still on full battery

You have the iPhone 4S, the answer to unresponsive screen is there. Apple 'slow' down old phones to encourage consumers to buy their next big thing. You most likely upgraded to iOS 9 hence your issues with your phone.
Notifications? Lol. Simply disable them. The only notifications I have that 'ding dong' my phone is whatsapp. Everything else is manual.

I have no problem in my Android, it's 4 years old and still works like I just got it.

You can just disable the notifications.
Just don't download heavy stuff and make the phone full so it doesn't get slow, it's too normal for a smartphone to be slower if you overload it with stupid stuff like candy crush and color switch.. It's the same as a pc in that case..

Guys, why exactly are you saying all this? It's an experiment, you can rant about how good smartphones are all you want, I won't care -_-.
It is my choice, and if I'll be comfortable without a smartphone, I will permanently get rid of it.
-
It's a nice experiment there, good luck with it.
I personally am pretty dependant on a smartphone. Though I did an experiment of being 2 weeks without Facebook or Messenger.

You got it wrong lol, what most of us meant (at least me) that smartphones are not crappy as you said, it depends on the person how he's using that piece of electronics. Didn't mean to go all against the experiment.
-
There are some people who need to have smartphones, as they receive important emails and need to be able to reply at any time. I, on the other hand, have no need for that.
-
That much about your budget smartphone

And this is related to this topic... how? How exactly is my cheap smartphone (which still runs well and flawlessly) is related to me deciding to ditch my smartphone altogether? How is it any different than a Samsung S7 in this aspect? You've just displayed ten kinds of stupid by your ignorance.
-
Great topic.
I'll start the same experiment tomorrow 00:00. May I include some of your results in our investigation about social media? I won't be able to use social media, forums and games for a week. (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Netflix etc.)

Nope. I'm using the smartphone as a tablet rather than a phone. In other words, it serves the purpose of watching movies on my couch. I don't bring it with me.
-
Don't have a TV to watch movies on? Normally a couch is near a TV in most houses.

Oh, I forgot to mention my own little experiment - getting rid of TVs.

Oh yeah? Well I'm getting rid of couches.

Amish is where it's at.

Oh yeah? I haven't even bought a couch because they take up so much space and bring 0 productivity to my life. All I can do at one is sit there doing nothing, just trying to kill time by looking at the clock. I hate couches.

At least you HAVE a clock!
But on topic, why?.. Voluntarily make things harder for you?
Last year my grandpa died and left us his farm in Croatia to take care of and I don't get reception there so I can't browse dank memes or anything, I still use my phone there, mostly to take photos because Croatia is fucking beautiful.
I just don't understand why take something that makes your life easier away from yourself. But for each his own.

I don't see how exactly does it make my life harder. Oh jeez, I can't stalk people on Instgram, such disaster

I was talking more practical uses, like I have an app that shows me where I parked my car, automatically sets GPS to home when I sit in the car, email is pretty important for what I do so I appreciate having it at my fingertips
Also browsing dank memes yo'

Agree with TrotlDebilni. My smartphone has never affected my social or professional life or whatsoever. If I stopped using my smartphone it wouldn't change jackshit about my life. Really, there will be absolutely 0 change in how I live if I stop using it.
You need therapy if your smartphone affects you in such a way that if you stop using it you get better.
-
Well anyhow, I was conclude the experiment anyway.
I did get back to my smartphone. The reason for that is that I really missed having a camera on the go, even though the phone's camera is not exactly one of the best, it's still better than an old Nokia 2.0 MP one :D.
However, due to the fact that I made a terrible choice in a smartphone purchase, music volume through headphones is far too low, and music is really important for whenever I go jogging, so I keep my SD card in my old Nokia and use it as an MP3 player instead. I am yet to find a phone that surpassed even the Nokia "dumbphones" that it comes to music quality.
-
Well anyhow, I was conclude the experiment anyway.
Well don't leave us hanging, which phone did you buy?
Hopefully a flagship and not a cheapidoo' phone
-

I didn't buy a new one :D. I returned to my previous phone, and to your misfortune, it is indeed a cheap, 120 EUR Chinese "Gsmart Classic" with Android 5.1. It runs fairly well performance wise, as it has 1GB of RAM, but the poor 3G connectivity outside the city and queit music volume on headphones are the major turn downs for me.
-
Hopefully a flagship
I'm such a whore when it comes to things like this. I won't buy anything other than a flagship device and when a new one comes out, I get it as soon as I can. My bank feels the pain.
-
Interesting experiment, I'm always on my iPhone, it's my computer, tablet, social media outlet, my work emails/instant messages come through on it... everything! All things I could do without a smartphone, but the phone makes it so much easier...
The only brand new phone I've been tempted by recently is the iPhone SE, otherwise I'd buy a secondhand one (most probably sold by Teddy the whore obvs <3 )
-
This topic reminds me of my wish to find somewhere in the world with a nice beach and a fully stocked bar... and no fucking internet service. I really do need a break from it all.

A device that is not flagship makes me cringe but updating it every time a new one is out makes me cringe too. I still have my iPhone 5 and it's in good working order. Just need to replace the battery and it can last me another year at best. My iPhone 5 can do the same shit as the iPhone 6 apart from apple pay.

B-but what about uploading those amazing beach views on instagram? What about getting a girl's number so you can whatsapp her that night to meet up? :(

Teddy the pussy destroyer. I don't know seems more pleasant then doing her on a park bench in London. (No before you ask)

Damn son, you savage! I'm the type of guy to go clubbing, grab a bit of ass and take her home. There's no clubbing at 3pm
Funny story last friday some girl left her denim jacket. I washed it and gave it to my sister

It's fine to take them home just as long as they know when they wake up it's time to leave. Besides, if this mystical beach place exists the place I'd be staying at would be right on the beach. mmmm paradise for real.

Last december after my grandfather died I and my family inherited a farm in croatia, it's in the middle of nowhere next to a river, he brewed his own beer and made his own schnops, he has no internet connection there, there is barely any signal, it makes for the perfect vacation spot/hide dead bodies of your defeated enemies spot.
.. dude.. you really need this, the first time I stayed there for vacation for two weeks I felt refreshed, and than came home and realized I missed a huge Reddit scandal where /r/fatpeoplehate was banned and some shit..
Basically yeah, you need a break, you need a good long break some times.

Washes the clothes and irons them, something my mum was meant to do like 3-4 hours ago.

I don't normally have breakfast but when I do it's gotta be fresh eggs with bacon, and it's gotta be made just right.
