Title: NASCAR, a waste of fuel?
Post by: Roadkill on March 31, 2009, 03:04:51 am
I'm up pretty late and I'm stumbled upon NASCAR. After 5 minutes of watching this with an open mind, I was so bored. 500 laps of going around the same oval, same racing line, not much team work, doesn't require any skill whatsoever apart from endurance.

I know that NASCAR probably makes a huge profit but there are better ways of making money without it costing the earth and being completely pointless at the same time.

Now I'm a HUGE F1 fan, I really do support F1 so I'm kind of contradicting myself when I talk about better ways of making money than costing the earth but it is a LOT more worth it. NASCAR run many more races than F1 for much longer, have more cars (heavier cars), more practices (how much practice does it take to go in a damn oval?), longer qualifying, and pointless races that don’t even count for points during the week. In F1 the tracks are different each race, there is a lot more teamwork, a lot of overtaking.

Is NASCAR just a complete waste of fuel?

Personally, I will never watch it again.

:ps: Jenson Button to win this season!

Yeah and everyone could walk or use a different mode of transportation instead of driving, no more pointless then that.

As pointless as NASCAR is, basically all racing is a "Waste of fuel," as you put it. Using fuel isn't "Costing the Earth." Our planet has more than enough oil to support us for many more years.

NASCAR is incredibly boring, but think of all the jobs that people have, think of the money the stadiums are getting from it, think of the economic plusses that the NASCAR influences.

Is NASCAR just a complete waste of fuel?
No, it is not just a complete waste of fuel.
It is also a waste of:

- Original spare parts for most of the car's models (expensive ones too).
- Waste of experiences drivers with pretty good skill, could be used in a more interesting show.
- Time, the audience's time and the automechanics' time and skill is also being wasted.

I once watched two laps of this and got extremely bored. I watch F1 (not qualifications and trainings, only races) and I am a fan of it, I support the dangerous speeds there and the concentration and stability of drivers and their skills.
Something a lot more exciting than just watching a shitload of cars spinning in a round like idiots...

The major thing i liike Nascar is because the car crashes  they are way cool ....  but the race is boring ...... too much laps to go ....
Personally i love the F1  :D there you can see competition , teamwork and cool races  !!  :D

WRC is muuuch better. At least it requires some SKILLS, unlike F1.

It's a love/hate thing. Just like everything els

So you're saying F1 doesn't require any skills? Are you kidding? + You can't really compare rally with race on track

I like both WRC and F1. Both require very different skills, both as difficult as each other. I personally find F1 more exciting than any other motorsport.

It's all about entertaining.

But lets face it, it isn't really is it?

I know it's my opinion, whatever but I am finding it hard to understand why anyone would find it entertaining.

Trojan, I get your point and in my own view I think its a waste of fuel and can be used for something more important. I just think people find it entertaining when people crash and therefor the Nascar keeps going with so high spectators number.

Whilst I find any racing fairly boring, I can't get the idea of NASCAR or indeed F1.
They are both pretty boring to me, whereas some racing like (for example) Rally driving I believe requires much more skill.

It's a waste of time, a waste of cash, a waste of the earth's resources, a waste of life, a waste of energy, a waste of construction work, a waste of car parts, a waste of oxygen, a waste of carbon dioxide, a waste of popcorn, and a waste of clothing.

So, you don't like it then? :)

As a long time fan of all kinds here are some thoughts :

F1 : has the highest techical development. Things you see in normal road cars like turbo engines, active suspension an many more would not be there without the extreme testing and development of F1. Too bad that the last couple of years the rules are becoming too strict and more pointed towards the 'show'. Although KERS (recovery of energy from braking) and in the future biofuel are giving some new impulses. While the cars are important, drivers skills are extremely high. Both physical fitness and intelligence is needed. F1 drivers run a marathon every 2 weeks, and need to understand exactly how a difference of 2mm in a part works.

WRC : This is a sport for drivers, much less for spectators. Good on TV, but to stand and watch a car go by every minute seems pointless. It also is an extreme testing for road cars.

NASCAR/IRL: American races are set very different from European. Visiting an event is much more interesting as watching on TV. There is a chance to actually talk to the drivers, most are very relaxed and will give out autograms to anyone. There are BBQ's all around the area. Spectators on ovals can see the whole track and what happens.
And yes...the crashes are spectacular. Races are won on strategy, not on all-out speed in many cases.
Strange for European racing fans is that a piece of paper on the road will cause a safety car, and rain will cancel the race (or postpone it one day).

Hey bro, I find it entertaining. Hell, I even got the old NASCAR game. 50 laps.. round .. round.. round..

And as Gandalf said, I guess you got to be there to understand it (I do even if I've never been in the USA :P). You don't sit quite and watch the cars go around and around with your legs crossed.. you know.. :P Face paintings, Hotdogs, chicks, crashes and cars with torque. It can't get better

every racing sport is interesting in their own way, its pretty much pointless judging the sport on only sitting home watching it on TV

seeing a car passing you on over 120km/h on not a traditional surface or going into a power slide - now thats booring ? No one even needs to crash to make the spectators happy.

uhhmm... no skill ? what ?

Seriously, the rate the human race is going, the expect oil, coal etc to be gone by 2050.
