It's a waste of time, a waste of cash, a waste of the earth's resources, a waste of life, a waste of energy, a waste of construction work, a waste of car parts, a waste of oxygen, a waste of carbon dioxide, a waste of popcorn, and a waste of clothing.

So, you don't like it then? :)

I just don't understand Nascar, I am also a huge F1 fan.

:ps: Jenson Button, or Massa :P

As a long time fan of all kinds here are some thoughts :

F1 : has the highest techical development. Things you see in normal road cars like turbo engines, active suspension an many more would not be there without the extreme testing and development of F1. Too bad that the last couple of years the rules are becoming too strict and more pointed towards the 'show'. Although KERS (recovery of energy from braking) and in the future biofuel are giving some new impulses. While the cars are important, drivers skills are extremely high. Both physical fitness and intelligence is needed. F1 drivers run a marathon every 2 weeks, and need to understand exactly how a difference of 2mm in a part works.

WRC : This is a sport for drivers, much less for spectators. Good on TV, but to stand and watch a car go by every minute seems pointless. It also is an extreme testing for road cars.

NASCAR/IRL: American races are set very different from European. Visiting an event is much more interesting as watching on TV. There is a chance to actually talk to the drivers, most are very relaxed and will give out autograms to anyone. There are BBQ's all around the area. Spectators on ovals can see the whole track and what happens.
And yes...the crashes are spectacular. Races are won on strategy, not on all-out speed in many cases.
Strange for European racing fans is that a piece of paper on the road will cause a safety car, and rain will cancel the race (or postpone it one day).

But lets face it, it isn't really is it?

I know it's my opinion, whatever but I am finding it hard to understand why anyone would find it entertaining.

Hey bro, I find it entertaining. Hell, I even got the old NASCAR game. 50 laps.. round .. round.. round..

And as Gandalf said, I guess you got to be there to understand it (I do even if I've never been in the USA :P). You don't sit quite and watch the cars go around and around with your legs crossed.. you know.. :P Face paintings, Hotdogs, chicks, crashes and cars with torque. It can't get better

every racing sport is interesting in their own way, its pretty much pointless judging the sport on only sitting home watching it on TV

seeing a car passing you on over 120km/h on not a traditional surface or going into a power slide - now thats booring ? No one even needs to crash to make the spectators happy.

WRC is muuuch better. At least it requires some SKILLS, unlike F1.
uhhmm... no skill ? what ?

As pointless as NASCAR is, basically all racing is a "Waste of fuel," as you put it. Using fuel isn't "Costing the Earth." Our planet has more than enough oil to support us for many more years.

Seriously, the rate the human race is going, the expect oil, coal etc to be gone by 2050.
