So I set up my new PC but I can't figure out how to make the GPU work as there aren't enough power connectors.. Any help would be appreciated
Power connectors my PSU has:
24 pin; 4 Pin (12V); 1 x 6 pin PCI-e; 4 x Sata; 3 x 4 pin; 1 x FDD
Power connectors my GPU needs:
8-pin & 6-pin
Would a PCI Express 4 Molex Pin to 6 Pin Power cable adapter be sufficient, e.g. this (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/akasa-pci-express-4-molex-pin-to-6-pin-power-cable-adaptor-(ak-cb4-6))?
-
If a GTX 580 requires such basic connectors and you dont have them, then are you sure that your PSU is even enough for the card?
Tell us what PSU you have :)
edit: Also tbh. It would be good to know your CPU also. Since theres no point on getting the best GPU in the world if your CPU is to slow to even take advantage of it. It will bottleneck your GPU
nevermind just read that you already had the GPU. Sorry
-
Yes such connectors would do the job, but for a GTX 580 I'd recommend at least a 550-600W power supply. ;)

I have a 750 W PSU

I think because you need an 8 pin you will need this. (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dual-Molex-4-pin-dual-6-pin-8-pin-PCIe-cable-/310298570982?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item483f3c70e6#ht_1207wt_952)

What kind of 750W PSU does not have a 6 pin + 8 pin PCIe connector O_o Weird.

Maybe it's an old one.
-
I wouldn't risk these 4 pin to 6/8 pin connectors. They often can't handle the needed voltage and have indeed blown up one of my videocards in the past. Get a better PSU instead
-
Kinda odd that it only has one 6 pin PCI-e, what brand is it?
-
Right, here we go, I had this sort of issue with mine...
Generally it's seen that you have Dual 4 pin plugs which go into one 6 pin if you use an adapter. Do not even consider using a single 4 pin to an 8 pin.
Then if you want an 8 pin, you need two six pins to make the 8.
As my card needed the same pin setup, and I had the same plugs on my PSU, I used a dual 4 pin (Molex) to 8 pin PCI-e and it worked perfectly well.
Anyway, it's only a cheap wire that has other uses, if it doesn't work then get a new PSU :)
Hope this helped.
What you're looking for I guess is a Dual Molex (4pin) to 8 pin PCI-e adaptor

That look like it'd do it?

I have a 750 W PSU
1 of the rules of PC building
DO NOT skimp out on the PSU get your self a Corsair TX750W

Why buy a new PSU (for +$80) when you can buy a dual molex to 8-pin adapter ($2)?

I got an 8-pin to 2 6-pin adapter with the card by the way.. (which I find very weird)
My PSU is Alpine 750W Silent.

Like I said Corsair TX750
Never skimp out on the PSU

Exactly the same as mine.
Blackcase, about 30GBP?

Mine does the job, fuck off with your brand recognition bullshit.
-
Its not bullshit. L2 PSU tbh :) It will probably work easily. But it seems to be the quality of a good 450/500w psu...
-
Mine does the job, f**k off with your brand recognition bullshit.
I kind of agree because we aren't talking about a broken PSU, we are talking about one that is lacking a connector.

Gimli, Julio/Joe is the one to listen to. He's got a GTX 280 wired up which had the same issues entirely as yours
