Title: NYC school bans birthdays, halloween and dinosaurs
Post by: Gimli on March 29, 2012, 03:18:27 pm
"New York educators banned references to 'dinosaurs,' 'birthdays,' 'Halloween' and dozens of other topics on city-issued tests. That is because they fear such topics 'could evoke unpleasant emotions in the students.' Dinosaurs, for example, call to mind evolution, which might upset fundamentalists; birthdays are not celebrated by Jehovah's Witnesses; and Halloween suggests paganism. Homes with swimming pools and home computers are also unmentionables — because of economic sensitivities. The city asks test companies to exclude 'creatures from outer space' as well — for unspecified reasons."

This is absolutely ridiculous - every culture has it's own differences and we can't simply adapt to everyone. Your thoughts?

Pathetic!

Really that is so stupid. People should make allowances and accommodation for others beliefs.

It's saddening to see how the United States is turning into a police state, ever since the September 11 attacks..

In this year's US presidential elections, I will be voting for Ron Paul (http://www.youtu.be/ynUC6sucUPU/) as he seems to be the only candidate that promises change in this regard. One could argue that much more damage has been done by government organizations like the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) (http://www.youtu.be/RwvcpS5iLjI/) and the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) (http://www.youtu.be/gXjfrX1TodU/), as well as the PATRIOT act, rather than by actual terrorists.

I hope those of you that are American and have voting rights will properly research the main presidential candidates yourselves rather than blindly relying on the opinions of your family or friends. Try finding their views on issues that directly relate to you, for example laws like SOPA or PIPA.

In other news, a US high school senior has been expelled for using the word f**k in a personal tweet posted from home - http://www.indianasnewscenter.com/news/local/High-School-Senior-Expelled-For-Tweeting-Profanity---144022966.html (http://www.indianasnewscenter.com/news/local/High-School-Senior-Expelled-For-Tweeting-Profanity---144022966.html)

Many people feel greatly offended by taxes. Perhaps they should remove them as well. :D

As for the US elections, the only way for Obama to get a second term is for his opponents to be total and utter idiots. Republicans seem to see that as their mission.

Next up, biology is banned from schools because evolution goes against the religions some students are members of.

This already happened years ago; in the far past the teaching of evolution was illegal, however after some debates and due to the fact of the constitutional separation of Church and state this was lifted now every single Public School in the states is required to tech the theory of evolution in their curriculum.

As for this topic, I see this to be a major fault in the United States education system. Rather limiting children to a box and blanketing them from the world around them, they should be enabled with the tools and resources to see other options in the world and learn about them, regardless of religious boundaries and what they may or may not imply.

Does the US have a government funded Catholic School System? I know here in Canada we have a government funded Public School System and a Catholic School System... Idk if the US does the same?

I believe that the only subject in school that should not exhist at all is 'religion', because for example in Greece, the state forces everybody to attend that subject, even if they are not Christians.. >.<

The Catholic schools are part of the private education sector and are not fully funded by the government, they do get some assistant via the Government but not like public education. Thus these private schools cost a hefty price typically cost around 12,000 - 40,000 dollars a year depending on the school.

Triple - US (http://www.youtu.be/lZD4ezDbbu4#), LT and Argonath! I only got Lithuanian citizenship in 2010 - thank god the Soviet Union forced my grandma to go to Siberia, otherwise I wouldn't be eligible for Lithuanian citizenship at all (sad yet true)..

LOL.

The whole idea to have it changed because it was "racially offensive" was eventually scrapped after parents and anyone with half a brain deemed it ridiculous.

This is like those dark ages where agents of the Church suppressed contemporary modern sciences...

Sad to think how even the Catholic Church already adapts to new technologies, slowly or not (the Pope has a twitter), while learning institutions run by such closed-minded dumb fucks see to the banning of many unique cultural aspects... suppose some natural disaster wiped out the school's administration, I'd join their students in celebrating.

Barely to do with Catholic church - these make their money through the usual contacts from which they made power back in the late Roman Empire... Ahead of that is just our comrade Pope being a good tourist and asking, asking, asking, and asking...

It has more to do with the protestant/evangelical/f**k knows what churches who are not centralised/organised like major churches are, so they have to live off of fooling people into giving them their hard earned cash.

The point anyway is that knowledge in one's mind will always conflict with the religion there. Since these churches will obviously make less profit with more knowledge it's no surprise they press for such a thing.

I hope this idiot school just closes down from lack of students, from the amount of complaints from children, from negative publicity, or from all of the above. It probably would anyway.

Yeah, many parents see the removal of such distractions as a benefit to their child's learning, although personally I see it as a negative towards social development...

Some of the best lessons in school life are learned outside the classroom too. I honestly pity the result of closed-minded parents who place too much blind faith in a system meant to curtail human rights under the guise of educational learnings.

Thats true, in school I was always told by my teachers I was intelligent and could be doing better but I was just to lazy to, I found I learned more out of school than I did in school, when I did go all I did was mess around, wish I did better.
