To be fair, it will probably suck a large amount of balls. It isn't going to work the way that microsoft wants.

Windows 8 is ok... even for desktops.. but I think I'll be sticking with Windows 7 on my dekstop.

Windows 8's design is indeed complete pisstake however the OS itself is pretty neat from what I see on the preview version.

Hopefully this will be like Vista - I'll casually skip over it running the stable OS and grab the next one once microsoft realise what a massive cockup they've instigated.

As usual people are already spreading shit because they downloaded a buggy beta version from a pirate source. The reason it will be a disaster for Steam is that Microsoft does not like the way they are intruding in to the software to add their protection, so they may have to rewrite Steam for Windows 8.
That is of course a disaster as they might actually have to work...

From what i've seen of Windows 8, i'm not impressed. I dont know if it's just me, but i really dont like the new layout and will most likely not use it unless i'm forced to.

Me neither. I'll just stick with Windows 7 and see what the future brings us.

If I may add :

- Blizzard's Rob Pardo: Windows 8 is "not awesome" for the company. Pardo was the lead game designer for Blizzard's World of Warcraft when it launched in 2004 and that game went on to grab over 10 million monthly subscribers; Rob is now the executive vice-president of game design for all of Blizzard's games. (Source (http://www.neowin.net/news/blizzards-rob-pardo-windows-8-is-not-awesome-for-the-company?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter))

- The man behind the PC (and Xbox 360) hit Minecraft and head of Mojang, Notch, recently held an AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread on Reddit a few days ago.  One user asked about what he sees for the future of the (indie) gaming industry over the next 10 years.  His response? "I hope we can keep a lot of open and free platforms around. If Microsoft decides to lock down Windows 8, it would be very very bad for Indie games and competition in general. If we can keep open platforms around, there's going to be a lot of very interesting games in ten years, mixed in with the huge AAA games that we all love." (Source (http://www.screwattack.com/news/mojang-shares-blizzard-and-valves-concerns-about-windows-8))

- Carmack (ID Software): Nothing exciting about Windows 8. Speaking at QuakeCon 2012, Carmack told the audience during his keynote that there is nothing exciting about Windows 8. "Windows XP did everything we needed for quite awhile," he said, "Hardly anyone at id used Vista." When Windows 7 came out, Carmack added, it was a bit more attractive because it did some things better and faster, so there is no reason for him to consider switching to Windows 8. I don't know about you, but I love Windows 8. It took a while to get used to, but now I prefer it over Windows 7.

I use a beta version of it, so it is a bit buggy. The UI completely crashes sometimes (once a week) and I have to restart my computer. In addition to that, there are compatibility problems with some programs (such as some niche Daemon Tools plugins). Perhaps these problems would go away if I upgraded to the release preview instead of the developer preview..

Microsoft is not a pirate source (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/release-preview)

Sorry for this almost 1-month bump, but this bit of news is so damn interesting. But all I have to say about Windows 8 is this:

Think about the Past + Current Windows OS friendlyness towards PC games. As in does it crash/BSOD often?

Lets see....

Windows 95 = Good
Windows 98 = Good
Windows ME = Source of All Evil
Windows XP = The best Windows OS of all time
Windows Vista = Horrible
Windows 7 = Very good

Is just me, or does anyone else see the pattern going on here from Windows 98 on?  :trust:

It's not just you. From what I've seen the 'tiles' there are only a few, that means you would have to go through the whole tile shop before you get to the file location you want.

Microsoft = Apple wannabe.

NO one beats Apple when it comes to locking down a OS and sucking the money dry from it's customers with overpriced computers.

However, if it's one thing Microsoft does good, is that they manage to make each new version even dumber and more fit for hopeless people who know just as much about computers as your avarage redneck knows about being Civilized.
In a bad way of course, because with each version they lock down their shitty OS even more and unnecessarily move important options even further into the bloatware like enviroment.

Really, When Photoshop, some games I like and FL studio works native under linux, I will leave Windows behind completely in a heartbeat.
And hopefully it will happen faster now with the big players in the markets are making their moves after realising that Windows 8 is the start of a new era of stupidity and unproductive work environments.

I want a OS that works, not a OS that thinks of itself as a telephone.

Value,Blizzard, Mahjong, all on the same page about this Well I think this is a big big thing we should worry about I mean I already ditched xbox/PS gaming as its gotten to pricy and stupid but if Win 8 is going to be like every MAC then I believe I will stay in the 2000's tech era and let the world evolve around me.

Windows 8 is purely intended to focus on the consumer market of this very moment (read: people that buy overpriced phones, tablets you can't put in your pocket and using instagram to call yourself a professional photographer).

For me, it ruins the entire workflow and never, ever, I will move to Windows 8 unless I'm forced to work with it. A computer should stay a computer. Touchscreen ain't needed for that at all. It's stupid and slow. To my idea, this entire technology being based on the 'mindless' consumer is really getting on my nerves. Windows 7 will at least last me another 5 years before I even consider moving on.

I haven't seen anything mentioned that is substandard. He stated that touchscreen technology is "stupid and slow" but that is incorrect.

As for nonessential technologies, surely it is subjective as to whether they are classed as such? He may not have a use for the latest phones, but other people do.

Touchscreen is slow, dirty, frustrating and absolutely counterproductive. If you can give at least one example in which touchscreen outruns the accuracy and speed of the older methods, please do instead of calling me names.
Also, why on earth do you need an iPad? Why do you need a phone that has a bigger processor than your PC? It's because of all this overpriced materials that all the prices are going higher and higher.
Do you even know how to use a compass or do you rely on your phone to get you home safely?

A phone was made to make 'phone' calls or to text something important to another person. Why on earth would you need more features on your phone than that? Games, movies, internet, why do you need them on your phone, because it's too hard to rely on your mind to keep yourself occupied on the road?

The only reason of use I can appoint to a smartphone or tablet is for executives and managers, not for teenagers or young adults, including myself. Of course, the larger companies have smelled the consumer's money and of course nowadays they're being produced in big amounts... And all most of us do is buying it. Figures.

Are you referring to touchscreen in general? If so, you are absolutely incorrect. I have many touchscreen products, and the negatives you speak of are just not present in any of them. Yes, the first ever touchscreen products to come to market were slow and generally bad, but that's certainly not the case today, even on a PC.

Also, why on earth do you need an iPad? Why do you need a phone that has a bigger processor than your PC? It's because of all this overpriced materials that all the prices are going higher and higher.

I used an iPad (now Kindle) for recipes in the kitchen, or for reading. Yes, I could have physical books, but to be honest I don't have the space to keep lots of them. Having as many as I want stored in a place as small as a tablet is convenient and a lot easier for me.

And what phone has a bigger processor than a PC? If it's 10 years old, maybe so...

Do you even know how to use a compass or do you rely on your phone to get you home safely?

Yes, I know how to use a compass (I even know how to make one, if that counts for something), but that's not really a good argument against smartphones is it? I doubt many people need a compass to find their way home...

Does this mean you are also against having Sat Nav on phones? What about sat Navs in cars? Or even cars in general? Why drive when you were given legs...

A phone was made to make 'phone' calls or to text something important to another person. Why on earth would you need more features on your phone than that? Games, movies, internet, why do you need them on your phone, because it's too hard to rely on your mind to keep yourself occupied on the road?

Not at all. I find it easy to keep myself occupied without technology, however having a smartphone makes my life easier. You may not have a use for them, but I need to read my emails on the go, I need to sometimes use the browser when away from home, I like having my music and a camera on one device, etc.

If I recall correctly, I believe you said you use a Samsung U800. This has a camera, video recording, music player, games, image/video editor, etc. If you are so against phones having the ability to do things other than call and text, then why are you not using a Nokia 2110?

I will however agree about the games and movies.

The only reason of use I can appoint to a smartphone or tablet is for executives and managers, not for teenagers or young adults, including myself.

Well that would depend entirely on the person. Regardless, it doesn't mean smartphones and tablets are pointless.

They are pointless. Books don't consume electricity and they won't fail you or ask you to pay for something after purchase. Besides they will not fail you should the powerline be cut.
Touchscreen in overall, compared to what energy it consumes with other devices is pointless and only good for toying around with. A keyboard has proven to be much faster in work environments compared to a touchscreen. Shouldn't even be talking about how dirty the touchscreen gets overall.

Drive because the distance between you and your destination is too far to walk.
This technology is great for people that do get an advantage from it as Businessmen in general. That they need to check their e-mail and need internet outside, I fully agree.

However, assuming you do not have such a type of job, I can't think of any reason to need internet outside your house except for an addiction you do not want to acknowledge. The internet is big, but that you need it everywhere is not correct. Rethink about it and also think at once how much energy all of these smartphones, iPads and other things consume. That a PC came to it's existance is all good. That we need all of that outside, no..

Yes, I have a Samsung U600 which is a work bonus. I didn't buy it, I've got it for free from my previous work. Same goes for my first laptop. It's more turned off to save it's older battery and since I don't like being disturbed at any time of the day.

This and this version of Windows 8 simply relies on what the consumer, who seems to buy anything they find 'cool' nowadays, and is the result of the entire make-over the new version of Windows went trough. People like smartphones and tablets, so why not make a PC-Operating System that looks related to it? From marketing perspective, Windows 8 has a brilliant view. Many people will buy it only because of that, leaving the quality or the money being invested out of the picture.

But what you have stated is mostly from a personal point of view. For example, you ask me to think about how much energy these devices consume (as a negative), when to be honest, I really couldn't care less about energy usage. Now I'm not sure if you are referring to cost, or emissions, but neither of them matter to me. It's exactly the reason why my car costs £110 to fill up rather than driving something electric or hybrid for a lower cost.

As for the books, I've already stated that I do not have the space to store hundreds of them, therefore tablets are the next best alternative for me. The possibility of the powerline being cut, etc. is small, so that doesn't matter to me. In fact, I don't think reading would be the first of my priorities if I suddenly found myself without power.

I agree keyboards are better, and I won't shift from them, but there really isn't anything wrong with touchscreen on devices. My phone for example is ultra responsive and I can't think of any negatives to not having the traditional button layout like previous handsets.

I need email and the Internet for my job.

I'm no fan of Windows 8.

I understand why people disliked Vista, but I still use it. Partly since I think it's similar to 7 anyway when you look past the interface/bugs.

I would still use XP if I could. It's simplicity and usability, plus almost everything worked without problems.

I don't like the way Microsoft seems to be moving more towards the Apple business model, and they're not allowing for some things such as gaming to evolve as it has been. I'm not a Steam fanbody, I actually think it's quite annoying, but I understand what they mean.
