Title: Sony PlayStation 4 Revealed!
Post by: Matt Murdock on February 20, 2013, 05:48:23 pm
Sony is holding an event in New York, during which it has promised to reveal "the future".

But the console manufacturer has refused to confirm widespread rumours that the latest version of its PlayStation will be launched.

However previous events have been used to premiere new hardware like the current PlayStation and the Vita hand-held console.

Recent photographs leaked online appear to show a prototype controller with a touchpad alongside the classic DualShock-style controls.

The unveiling will excite millions of video game fans across the world and add fuel to the on-going battle between Sony, Xbox 360 manufacturers Microsoft and Nintendo, the makers of the Wii system.

Since the first PlayStation console launched in December 1994, Sony has sold more than 310 million home consoles worldwide and 2.9 billion games.

Microsoft is also tipped to reveal details of its next generation console in the coming months.

Larry Hryb, Xbox's director of programming, recently fuelled speculation by posting a countdown to June's E3 games show on his blog.

Today's event in New York is being seen by many as an attempt by Sony to steal a march on its fierce competitor.

Last time around it was beaten to the market by Microsoft, with the Xbox 360 coming out in November 2005 - a year before the PlayStation 3.

Console sales in the UK were down by a third last year, but games industry body UKIE has suggested the dip may be partly due to shoppers saving their money for next generation machines.

Playstation :/
Now we know why GTA V was delayed.  ;)

P.S. The article I quoted was written some 8 hours ago, check the links + google news, by now it has been confirmed that a new gaming console from Sony will be 'revealed' tonight.

When'll it come to market? No idea.

I am a huge playstation fan but I think the prices are going to start approaching that of a gaming PC and features are going to be gimmicky and expensive.

So I have a feeling, although I still have PS3 and play it regularly, I may never get the next gen consoles simply because, value for money is currently at the PC. Even without pirating, most games thrive off FREE 3rd party mods which keep me playing all my favourite PC games.

I am very excited for it nonetheless! I would only get it if there was some amazing exclusives (which in this day and age I doubt)...

No. They would have to remake the game all over if that were the case. They already stated it would be for the PS3. It's possible that they may port it, but even the PS2 continued to have new games made after the PS3 came out. This is not a PlayStation-related marketing move for Rockstar Games.

I wish we could have heard about some prices and actually got a look at the thing! Also a raw specification sheet would be nice to look at and compare it to the PS3.

We could use proper titles instead of outright lies, though. It's free.

I'm not really surprised at the PS4, they could've done so many things but instead they just went and made a huge social network of sorts.

How can you ever underestimate a company like Rockstar games and a franchisee as huge as GTA?

Even watchdogs, the true contender for GTA series so far, will be coming on PS4.

Who knows GTA V was actually developed for new gen consoles? i.e. Maybe they built the games on some kind of prototype of PS4?

First of all, the PlayStation 4 is still being developed. Second of all, it would take a year or more, even with Rockstar Games' power, to port a game to a brand new system. I guarantee that is not what caused the delay. If it was, it'd be pushed back more than a year, not a few months.

Because Ubisoft made that on a development system from scratch. It's not a game that is already near completion that would need an incredible amount of work to port.

Yeah, but this isn't the PS2 we're talking about. Sometimes devices can even turn out to be worth more than the retail price after they're 'outdated' and old. You can't just assume it's gonna be like the PS2, which, as far as I know, didn't cost $500 2 months before the release of the PS3, but more like less than 50% of that. I think I bought my PS2 in 2006 or 2007. Before the release of the PS3, that's for sure, and I paid 200 euros for a deluxe package which had more shit than the regular one or something. Not sure anymore, but those were the prices at that time.

Anyways, it's pointless to say stuff like that, because it's simply a completely different product than the PS3/PS4. We'll see how it goes, but I promise you, if a PS3 will cost $80 USD, BEFORE GTA:V will be released, I'll buy one just because I promised it. ;)

64-bits[...]x86

x86 = 32-bits.

I wonder if the PS4 will become a console that can actually compete with the PC graphics and processing at the time of release.

It's estimated to be as good as a 600-700 dollar PC of today, so it's not really bad at all - but high-end PCs are better. It's understandable, though, because packing the Playstation with such good hardware would make it just too expensive.

Guys, do remember Consoles are optimized for games, and made for that one reason only, gaming.

So any new gen console can very easily beat any pc of the same gen with twice the price tag.

Twice the price tag? Perhaps, if they start selling at a loss, say, something like 400 dollars. Games would run about the same than a $800 PC I suppose. Very easily beat them? Doubtful, especially if we bump the price up to 500 USD and have it compete against a PC with an Ivy Bridge core i5 and any Radeon 7970 GPU (roughly 950-1000 dollars!)

Guys, do remember Consoles are optimized for games, and made for that one reason only, gaming.

Because all mainstream videocards above 200 USD are obviously not meant for gaming...

Fact is that all of the mid/high-end GeForce cards are designed to do exactly that. Don't forget 8GB VRAM barely means anything, and that it's probably gonna be the standard in PC videocards in less than two years, where the PS5 will take 7 years to be released, if they'll take just as long as they did when going from PS3 to PS4.

So any new gen console can very easily beat any pc of the same gen with twice the price tag.

Never has been like that, never will be like that. ;)

I doubt they will actually put as much power as possible and make it relatively cheap.

It will always be somewhere middle-ish for consoles, while PCs will always have the full range technology will and can provide.

Not to mention the extremely poor build quality on Sony's Playstation 2 and onward. I don't know about the PS1, but good luck finding any PS2 that's unmodified AND still works. The disc mechanism is just so poor and flimsy, it just dies of regular use after three years or so. I know mine did, and honestly, it's nothing but logical, because it bears the name 'Sony'. How many PS3s need a laser replacement after 1 year? Disc read errors, anyone? Red screen of death, anyone? Fact is, if you use them regularly, Playstation disc mechanisms don't last for more than 3 years if it's an old one, and if you've got a PS3, you'll be replacing plastic lasers on a yearly base.

Of course, these are just my estimations, if you don't use it that often, it will obviously last longer. It's not the technology either. My Philips CDD882 was built in 1989, used almost daily, and hasn't required a single modification or repair yet. This is just the disc mechanism that they screwed up, but I've read stories about overheating, it not booting up anymore, all sorts of stuff, really.

I wouldn't spend more than $100 USD on a console, because replacing all that stuff can be annoying, because Playstations aren't very forgiving when putting them back together. Not to mention the price of the parts if you can find any at all. PCs are much more reliable, you can buy quality parts and pick from dozens of manufacturers, combine parts with specifications that match each other nicely, and use cases, fans, and heatsinks to treat these parts properly. All stuff that's almost impossible to do in a Playstation.

I really hope for all the console gamers that the new generation of consoles will be built more properly than all the previous ones, but I highly doubt. Apperently it's impossible to build quality products that read discs for a decent price anymore.

I think you mean the PlayStation 3 and onward. The PlayStation 2 is quite durable if taken care of. I have two early model ones that still work fine. My friend has gone through 4 PS3's due to technical failures and overheating. Most of the downfalls for the PS2 were caused by dust.

I agree that the PS3 is even worse, but the laser assembly and motor of the PS2 need maintenance quite a lot if they're used often. The early versions are built more solidly than the later slim ones, but they're still pretty bad.

04 - Console Repair - PS2 Laser Replacement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzvKiE-zNAs#)

This is something that happens a lot. You can see the cheap mechanism. Sony isn't exactly known for good mechanisms, most of their good stuff has Philips CDMs in it. ;)

I got my PS2 for six years now, and it still works quietly smooth. If some game ain't working its because of CD and not in PlayStation.

Both, actually. Your PS2 just won't read as good as it did when it was new. The laser is slowly dying, which is why it will read slower, and read less games.

PS4 logo looks nice, AS THATS ALL THEY BOTHERED TO f**kING SHOW.

Yeah, was fairly disappointed they didn't show the unit. They had one up there as they had live gameplay so.... and also unsure why they neglected to detail the hard drive space

TBH the games that they showed the PS4 would run just looked like the normal PS3 games anyway, doesn't look like anythings changed.. Everyone who wants a PS4, should just save up for a good gaming PC, as thats all the PS4 will be.

Except cheaper, and better to use in a living room instead of a desktop.

I'm all pro-PC but I see the point of consoles, yes

My PS2 still works, the slimline one  :pop:

Some will, but you have to take extreme care of those models. They have a horrible habit of breaking very easily due to dust and heat.

"I get bored of consoles after 2 minutes blebleble"

BIG WOW, I HATE SOMETHING THAT OTHERS LIKE BECAUSE ITS BORING

Everything appeals to someone at one point on another, you don't need to show off how you're special with sticking to your console or PC, its your own choice only, no need to tell how glorious one or another is.

I didn't want to continue this argument, but I see this too much for it to go unnoticed.

Like a console? fine. Don't like it? fine

Like always, PlayStation are going all out this time, but Xbox will wait and watch and then when they bring there console out it will be better than the play station.
No, Microsoft already stated they have no plans to upgrade to GDDR5, and they'll stick with DRR3 for the time being.

Imagine, a 8GB GDDR5 GPU in PS4. :D

just fuckin epic!

Also, you can do some 3D animation on it with move controllers, they showed a glimpse of that in trailer.

:ps: For those of you thinking it'll be extremely expensive due to hardware, I read on Cnet -
''When it comes to consoles, hardware is always sold at a loss, its software where money is made.''

That's correct. Sony makes a portion off of the software sales for licensing and fees. If they didn't, the PS3 would have already tanked them...especially with the original models.
