Not to mention the extremely poor build quality on Sony's Playstation 2 and onward. I don't know about the PS1, but good luck finding any PS2 that's unmodified AND still works. The disc mechanism is just so poor and flimsy, it just dies of regular use after three years or so. I know mine did, and honestly, it's nothing but logical, because it bears the name 'Sony'. How many PS3s need a laser replacement after 1 year? Disc read errors, anyone? Red screen of death, anyone? Fact is, if you use them regularly, Playstation disc mechanisms don't last for more than 3 years if it's an old one, and if you've got a PS3, you'll be replacing plastic lasers on a yearly base.

Of course, these are just my estimations, if you don't use it that often, it will obviously last longer. It's not the technology either. My Philips CDD882 was built in 1989, used almost daily, and hasn't required a single modification or repair yet. This is just the disc mechanism that they screwed up, but I've read stories about overheating, it not booting up anymore, all sorts of stuff, really.

I wouldn't spend more than $100 USD on a console, because replacing all that stuff can be annoying, because Playstations aren't very forgiving when putting them back together. Not to mention the price of the parts if you can find any at all. PCs are much more reliable, you can buy quality parts and pick from dozens of manufacturers, combine parts with specifications that match each other nicely, and use cases, fans, and heatsinks to treat these parts properly. All stuff that's almost impossible to do in a Playstation.

I really hope for all the console gamers that the new generation of consoles will be built more properly than all the previous ones, but I highly doubt. Apperently it's impossible to build quality products that read discs for a decent price anymore.

I think you mean the PlayStation 3 and onward. The PlayStation 2 is quite durable if taken care of. I have two early model ones that still work fine. My friend has gone through 4 PS3's due to technical failures and overheating. Most of the downfalls for the PS2 were caused by dust.

I got my PS2 for six years now, and it still works quietly smooth. If some game ain't working its because of CD and not in PlayStation.

I agree that the PS3 is even worse, but the laser assembly and motor of the PS2 need maintenance quite a lot if they're used often. The early versions are built more solidly than the later slim ones, but they're still pretty bad.

04 - Console Repair - PS2 Laser Replacement

This is something that happens a lot. You can see the cheap mechanism. Sony isn't exactly known for good mechanisms, most of their good stuff has Philips CDMs in it. ;)

Both, actually. Your PS2 just won't read as good as it did when it was new. The laser is slowly dying, which is why it will read slower, and read less games.

Yes, I do agree that the slim models suck. I'd say that would be applicable to the PS3 slim model too.

We live in different dimensions, all consoles are quite durable if you don't fuck with them.

You know you're wrong if you hide behind your invisible powers you never had in real life. Those who watch me will entirely understand.

Why do I do what I do? Because I know you won't stand someone opposing you. And because you know you can't prove me I'm wrong.

Of course, but I mean in terms of general durability. I have a second generation slim PS3 that still works fine myself. In terms of design, it's horrible compared to the original fat models, but I still take care of it well enough to keep it going.

Yeah, was fairly disappointed they didn't show the unit. They had one up there as they had live gameplay so.... and also unsure why they neglected to detail the hard drive space

TBH the games that they showed the PS4 would run just looked like the normal PS3 games anyway, doesn't look like anythings changed.. Everyone who wants a PS4, should just save up for a good gaming PC, as thats all the PS4 will be.

Except cheaper, and better to use in a living room instead of a desktop.

I'm all pro-PC but I see the point of consoles, yes
