Unknown yet. Nobody can say whether there will be a reset or no. Just wait until further updates from Gandalf or scripters.

What stops you from buying an ammunation right now? They're all player-owned. You can always get a deal.

Personally I hope accounts are reset, some people with expensive and profitable bizz's tend to log on to restock/collect then /q which doesn't help frequent players at all.

We always want to do our best to get the message across to our users. We spend our days ignoring life and working on thousands of lines of code for you after all. We are often some of the members with the lowest activity, it is you guys, the everyday players who will hopefully enjoy the amount of work we put in. We are all affected by this choice, as we are all just players, even the admins, developers and even Gandalf. It is with this, we will do our best to tell you a head of time if there will be a reset..... by which I mean 30 seconds before the RS5 server goes live.

I would say give everyone an equal chance to get far in Argonath. A reset would do this.
I would say YES to the reset.

PS: If reset is going to happen you all should do a billion Dollar lotto :) :wow:

Well I will quote what someone said..
It will be fair for the noobs because they will have a fair chanse to get what we had for 3 years, it isn't fair for us, we will have to work what we alredy worked for, I mean why work twice for the same thing.

I agree with it, I don't mind the reset, but the people that worked for their money do.

Ohhhh Snap!

I wouldn't wanna work for it all again, since 2007 i have been working my way to the top, trying to get a business, eg, only lately i have just got shop in perishing square with alot of Profit, and also i have been getting alot of money, to buy cars, eg. it would be real gutting if we was reset because after a long time of working i dont want it all to be lost, but as it goes, to be honest i wouldn't mind, either keeping or losing, because losing it means we can all be even then, and see who becomes richest first!

Same here . But I wish that heritage list didnt excist . I mean we need an update in all the server not just parts . Corrently we know that Gvardia owns many things in SF , and its famous HQ . Well am I the onlyone who would like to see a change there? I mean why not LS? I said Gvardia because that the first that came in my mind . But I would actually love to see big changed in everthing .... As it is like now ... it will be a new script but infact pretty much the same story

In software development, sometimes projects are rewritten to such a huge degree that the old format is in no way convertible or compatible.

That's the price of making progress. To make progress, you must sacrifice or risk stuff.

Why use a faulty system riddles with bugs and bad design, that has served it's purpose for a long time when you can refactor and/or rewrite it from the ground up with a much better design that is future friendly and easy to expand/implement new features for?

I'm very much positive that Gandalf and his scripters could have choosen to keep the old design for accounts and such (if a reset now does happen because of this), however. That would lead to just another 4.x that would still be faulty because the design itself is old and faulty. Very much like evolution, thing evolve into better designs, more adapted for tomorrow.

If we did not adapt, we would still be in a cave eating meat over a fire...

How many does RS4 have?
Title: Re: Future of current accounts...
Post by: Gandalf on June 27, 2013, 01:13:00 am
How many does RS4 have?
The amount of lines says nothing. Things like comments or longer scripting methods can add many lines without making a script better (or worse).

RS1 contained about 11k lines. RS2 contained 20k lines and was unplayable due to it being advanced beyond SA:MP at the time.
After a major rewrite, RS2 became RS3 with only 10k lines of code.
However after splitting it for use by multiple scripters it was back to about 15k at the start of RS4.

Since then a lot has been added.

But from the rewrite from RS2 to RS3 (in 1.5 months) a lot was learned in efficiency and memory use. With most of the functionality intact the memory use decreased with 40%, and the number of lines by 50%. Main problem for the 'next generation' was that there were zero comments....

Edit:
RS5 is new in many ways. We have tried to determine the down sides of RS4 and find a way to work around it. That includes redesigning the data structure to make things not only faster and more secure, but also more flexible.
Like RS2/3 the concepts of RS5 are holding new surprises never seen before.
This is why stress testing will be important, as what works with 15 testers may not work with 100 players on server (found that out in RS2).

I think we can be very proud of the team that worked the past 5 years on RS3 to RS4.1 (CBFASI, Gimli, Haldir, David_Omid, Louis_Keyl, iDavid and not to forget Conroy - hope I did not forget anyone) and managed to turn my code in to something readable without making it too buggy.

RS5 is made in a new way and is new and exciting in its design as well as features. Regardless if we will bring over the old stuff or not, it is going to last for a long time in to the future.

All current accounts and in-game saved items maybe safe. I am sure they're backed-up somewhere or transferable to RS5. That is just my guess don't take my word for it. It's only the most acceptable answer.

How can commenting make the code worse? If anything, it should make it better for other scripters to understand the code.

It makes it a lot easier to maintain for new people. What I wanted to emphasize is that the length of a script does not equal quality.

I have always smiled at people offering script at a price per line. A function can be written in one line or in ten lines. If you are paid per line, guess which method you use....

Too bad you are not doing that, or the whole scripting team would be rich by now...
