Lithuanian dillema: Being in charge of our own land or leaving the EU?

Lithuanian people have actively protested the amendment to the consitution that had to be made in accordance to the EU Constitution, that would grant foreigners permission to buy land in Lithuania. Lithuanians are terrified by such amendment, because it would basically mean that any foreign company would be free to buy land in Lithuania, destroy our beautiful nature, land and make it a industrial wasteland. We would not have anything of our own - soon big foreign companies would literally buy such a small country as Lithuania. Lithuanians have initiated a referendum and have successfully reached the 300.000 signatures, which are needed in order to make a referendum, and the National Election Comission of Lithuania has confirmed that all the signatures are in place and gave the referendum a green light. However, Lithuanian politicians are unhappy - they say that if such referendum happens, Lithuania will very soon face sanctions from European Union, because we will be rejecting one of the main principle laws of the EU. They say that if we initiate such a referendum, we must make one more - referendum for leaving EU.

It depends on the economical situation of your country I suppose. There is something called the Schengen-agreement (google it), which is something as simple as free movement within Europe. This has given the wealthier countries like Norway, Sweden and the UK a massive immigration from eastern countries. The eastern-European countries are also loosing a lot of important education and tax-money by the fact that they are leaving the country.

We are also loosing out in some areas too due to the immigration. However I am someone who supports our EU membership and I think immigration has more positive impacts than negative (inb4 shot down by UKIP Mikal)

Yes, for the UK and Norway the immigration has mostly positive effects. The economy has been given a good boost with cheap labour from Poland and Lithuania. Though, it is unfortunate for countries in the east that are still underdoing democratic changes and building a strong economy. Knowledge and education is an important aspect. Just look at Latvia for example.

I agree with you. Unfortunately as Nigel Farage is a good speaker and politican (even though I don't agree with most of what he says) a lot of people believe what he is saying word for word, so aren't getting to see the benefits of EU membership. On leaving the EU we face an uncertainty which is likely to have negative impacts for our economy in the short term and maybe even longer.

The problem isn't banks, lack of political will, the recession, it’s simply that the current eurozone just isn’t an optimal currency area. And for a common currency to work it must be applied across something which is at least close to being an optimal currency area. So therefore the EU collapse is inevitable.
