Microsoft has recently released a Windows 8.1 update, which is aiming to make Windows 8.1 more convenient for PC keyboard and mouse users. It's apps now have close and minimise buttons, the taskbar doesnt dissapear once you go into start menu and apps can now be ran from desktop. Windows 8.1 after the update now rather boots directly to desktop, not to the start menu. That can be changed in settings if you dont want it, though. Here are a few screenshots.

Notice the taskbar and the power off button

Notice the app minimize and close buttons

Any idea what this update is called? Seeing as I updated Windows last night and these features have not changed.

Well I received it on my surface through the Windows Store.
I got 8.1 for my desktop off DreamSpark (for education purposes only ;) )

Quote
1.   Make sure that you’re running a full up-to-date Windows 8.1 installation
2.   Launch Windows Update and deploy all available patches
3.   Check out the Windows 8.1 Update download links and get the KB2919355 package
4.   Installation might freeze for a few minutes, but do not stop it, as the package is more than 700 MB in size, so it takes a while
5.   Once installation comes to an end, reboot your computer and let it deploy all files
6.   When you’re back in Windows, you should already see the Windows Store icon pinned to the taskbar, so this is a sign that Windows 8.1 Update has been deployed successfully
7.   Go back to Windows Update and check for new patches again
8.   Install everything in Windows Update as more feature packages might be available
9.   Reboot your computer after installation is completed and you are good to go

Sat up till 3am downloading and installing this, and then left my computer on all night to re-download my steam library, but overall its worth it, the boot time is so fast.  ;)

Windows 8 and 8.1 is absolutely bollocks.

Windows 8 was alright, it did get alot of time getting used too but once I got used to it I thought fuck it, let me just stick with this. The boot time was amazing, I can literally get on Argonath from a cold start in 30-40 seconds. The HP/Armour bar was also shown ingame (SAMP) and in general the laptop was so fast in every aspect.

Windows 8.1 came along and fucked up the base. I can not stand my laptop any longer. The boot time is very slow and the computer is generally slow. Not to mention I cant view my HP/Armour bar in 8.1.

However, since I have nothing to lose I will do this other upgrade and hopefully my laptop goes back to the state it was when I got it.

All in all, I will be downgrading to the amazing Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Just have a few questions which is delaying the procedure.

1) If I change OS, does it affect/void my warranty? I have a HP Pavilion 15 Notebook which was purchased in September 2013.

No, it don't, the warranty is only for the hardware, :3

I know which one you are talking about, it worked for like a few hours then back to normal. Lets hope it will fix in the 8.1 update.

I'm off to ASDA, hopefully the update will be done by then.

It definitely makes it a little more user friendly along with the power options in the "start menu".

Your missing "items" has nothing to do with Windows 8.1 but your mods and/or game configuration.
I updated from Windows 8 to 8.1 without an issue on SA:MP or any other game I have installed.

I have and always will run my game in stock mode. I don't know how to mod nor do I want to.
