When your life is on the line no number of rounds is too much. You shoot to stop the treath. You shoot until the treath is stopped. If that takes one shot or twenty shots, well thats irrelevant. A person that is not shot in a critical area can still fight back (for a short period). Not only did the cop ask Micheal to drop the knife 64 times, he also tried to use non lethal tazer multiple times. The cop did what he was trained to do, and when you got adrenaline coursing through your body, and being cornered up like that - the cop was obviously terrified.

The problem here is not that the unstable man posed a threat to the officer. The problem is that the officer could have used a proper solution that would have saved both their lives: one shot in the right spot. That would incapacitate the unstable man's ability to arm himself, while not killing him.

One of the purposes of combat training is so that you don't lose your shit on the field. For instance. Military get it so that they don't accidentally mow down an innocent family with an assault rifle during an adrenaline rush. Cops get it so that they don't shoot bystanders when they are trying to stop a robber running away. So on, and so forth.

It may get more terrifying when shit gets real. But as a representative of the law, there are more dangerous repercussions when you lose your shit. That's exactly why you are trained.

The perfect scenario would be an overwhelming amount of officers shooting stingers, flash-bangs etc with fully equpied body armor to deal with the unstable man. But when theres two officers with a tazer and and a gun they have to according to protect their own lifes. It's an unimaginable situation, and its hard for us to be in the officers shoes when you have to deal with a split second decision.

The officer did what he was trained to do, but its still a shitty situation all around..
