History About us

The Chinese triads are organized crime syndicates that developed out of various secret societies, originating in the 1600s and 1700s.  These secret societies were not necessarily criminal in nature - some were religious groups or underground organizations for political dissidents.
Over time, however, the triads developed into mafia-style organized crime families, engaging in extortion, money laundering, drug and human trafficking, contract killing, etc.  Most of the triads are based in Hong Kong and the southern Chinese mainland, although they also have an international presence in Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, and elsewhere.

According to legend, the precursors to the triads developed during the transition time between the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911).  They drew inspiration from the White Lotus rebels of the 14th century, who rose up against the ethnic-Mongol Yuan Dynasty, and helped bring the Han Chinese Ming to power.  In the seventeenth century, rebels identifying themselves as a new White Lotus rose once more, seeking to oust the ethnic-Manchu Qing and return the Ming to the throne.
