Can you not just use a VPN tho? I mean... doesn't this technically only affect the technologically impaired?
That would pretty much mean everybody in India, sadly. I'd be surprised if even 10% of computer science 'engineers' could figure it out.
This kind of blocks have been around for a while now though, practically all online video streaming sites are blocked, except a few like youtube and dailymotion. All you need to do is to upload a few pirated movies to their sites and send off an email to the company producing those movies. The site would be blocked within 24 hours.
The problem here is deeper than that though. First of all, there is a weird blocking mechanism, in which the website usually works the first few times, then the blocked message starts to show.Once it starts to show, it shows for all the blocked websites. Restarting your modem can let you open it again and again. It seems like there is some form of a weird blacklist for which IPs are blocked from these sites and which aren't.
The most probable reason is probably that the ISP is saving a copy of the HTTP request and letting you use the website. Eventually when a data mining bot uncovers that you've been on a blocked website, they probably redirect future traffic from you through a filter.This saves resources as not everybody has to be sent through the filter. This means that every single web request by everybody in India is being monitored, something that kicks the NSA right out of the dirt.
Plus, with the already shitty download speeds available to us, using a VPN kills it
