The Centennial of the Restored State of Lithuania is the 100th anniversary of the state 100 years after its founding on the 16th February 1918.
Lithuania's statehood dates to July 6, 1253 as the Kingdom of Lithuania, which became the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 14th century but was then followed by the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569. Between 1772 to 1795, most of Lithuania's territories were annexed by the Russian Empire.
Towards the end of World War I, on February 16, 1918, twenty people signed the Act of Reinstating Independence of Lithuania, which proclaimed the restoration of an independent State of Lithuania, creating a modern state. During World War II, Lithuania was forcibly occupied and annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940, followed by Nazi Germany in 1941, and again by the Soviets in 1944 as one of its constituent republics. During the late 1980s, Lithuania has fought to restore its independence which was culminated on March 11, 1990 during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, with the latter ceased to exist at the end of 1991. Since the restoration of independence, thousands of famous people have contributed to the prosperity of Lithuania's Europeanization during the past century.
