Olivia /'Liv/ Benson - Not every case is black and white

Olivia was born in 1978 as the product of the rape of Serena Benson in the spring of 1977 by a food salesman named Joseph H., who later committed suicide. At the time of the rape, Serena had been working in the cafeteria of Columbia University. Benson's Mother Serena, was an alcoholic who emotionally and physically abused Benson. Serena died from injuries sustained in a fall in 2000 when she was drunk, which left Benson deeply saddened.

Benson is tough, empathetic, and gets emotionally involved in Cases. Benson is a graduate of Siena College. While there, she held a membership in a sorority. In addition to English, Benson speaks Italian, Russian, some Spanish and French and is able to read the Miranda Warning in these languages.
Benson is deeply sympathetic to victims of sex crimes and as a result, she often quick to believe victims' stories. Benson's ability to sympathize with victims is a tremendous asset, but there are times when it comes back to haunt her.





Benson joined the NYPD in 1999, and was trained by Sergeant Karen Smythe at the 55th Precinct in the Bronx. After completing her probationary period, Smythe recommended that Benson be transferred to the Sex Crimes Unit (later renamed the Special Victims Unit) because of her talent for dealing with victims.

By  2004, she had received her detective's shield an was assigned to the 16th Precinct as a Detective 3rd Grade, and was partnered with Det. Elliot Stabler. She is promoted to Detective 2nd Grade a year later and Detective 1st Grade in 2011.

Benson's Captain Cragen asks her to take the Sergeant's exam following the retirement of Sergeant John Munch and she gets the promotion soon afterward; Cragen congratulates her for placing 48th out of 8,000 applicants.




Benson is now a Senior Deputy Sheriff within the Fort Carson Sheriffs Department, a sub division of the San Andreas Police Department. Her biggest wish is to claim up the carrier ladder and to be a Detective again.
