Roleplay Tips

I would just like to hint on some things that people don't do very well. These are Merc's tips so its only my opinion, if you do not like or want to flame them, then leave the topic. I hope these will help you out during your roleplaying of Argonath RPG.

1. People pulling out guns from thin air.
- Dont pull M4's or Mic or any weapon from thin air. If your in a vehicle just use '/me loads a clip into his M4.' and then step out of the car with that weapon in your hand, or if your on foot and have a pistol use '/me takes out his pistol from his waistband.' something along those lines.

2. Dual Weapons
- Try retain yourself from using dual weapons like Sawn-off shotguns or Tec9 on foot, this just creates people running around in circles trying to take each others HP health down, doing this is provocation of Deathmatch. This is VERY unrealistic. You can use Dual weapons for passenger Drive-by's but that should be it.

3. Police driving random vehicles.
- Do not drive random vehicles thinking your undercover. If there are not enough police cruisers around, then take a ride from an Officer who does have one. Try not to use Cheetah's for chasing down suspects because that is very unrealistic.

4. Language during roleplay
- "Stfu, lol, omg, wtf, lmao" are all examples of non-roleplay language used during roleplay. It is not hard to change from this "Omg nice car man" to this "Dude nice car". Same as "Stfu man, you ain't doing yourself any favours." and replace it with "Shut it man, you ain't doing yourself any favours." Change your language and stop the nonsense.

5. Bunny hopping
- I class this as a form of powergaming, getting an advantage over other players, although anyone can use it, for instance look out of your window. Do you see any people hopping down the street? No, didn't think so. So please refrane from using 'Bunny hopping' and just tap the sprint button and you will still go pretty fast.

6. GPS System
- If someone is running away from you on foot on in car and you lose them, cut off the roleplay right there. If you have used any of these lines before "Mate use /area ID to find him!" "Look on the map cops come lets go" you are just not roleplaying right. If you lose them on foot and they are hiding somewhere, just let the roleplay go and it will soon follow up.

7. OOC and IC confusion
- Some people I roleplay with ingame get confused with 'In Character' and 'Out Of Character' chat when they are using the "/l" command. All you need to do is put some (( brackets )) around your speech during roleplay. It is very easy and I hope most of you use this technique.
*/l (( I like roleplaying ))
*/l I like roleplaying

8. Random Roleplay
- I have seen people being stupid during roleplay. Like taking a granny skin and dancing in the middle of a gangsta ghetto hood and using things like '/me wants sex!!' and things like '/l C'mon lets have sexual intercourse!'... I mean c'mon, you could do this as OOC roleplaying but dont be stupid and act right and realistic during roleplay.

9. Attempt during roleplay
- Try using '/me attempts to grab John.' and not things like '/me grabs John punches him in the face and karate kicks him in the balls'. Sad to say it is just not realistic. Try giving each other a chance during roleplay by using the "attempt" method.

10. Eyes in the back of your head
- Someone is smoking weed around the corner as the police are driving by. The police cannot see the heroin taker but see the "[Rstar]Merc smokes some weed, getting high." in main chat. So they arrest the guy and that is that. This is almost metagaming and really the police should not see the weed smoker and should have just strolled past normally on patrol. (not offending any police officers or ARPD)

11. All cars are unlocked!
- Seriously c'mon. In real life all cars are not unlocked. Roleplay hotwiring a car with a screwdriver or something. I'm sick of suspects hopping into different cars when they explode. You should just try roleplay hotwiring it up, and if the police point guns at you, just give up.

12. Invincible
- Some players think they are superman, they have a gun pointed at there face and just hit the robber and run. Seriously act right! If you have a gun in your face, act scared!

Remember use the /me command in nearly every situation you come across during roleplay, I hoped this helped.

What's the nonsense about "omg nice car man"? People talk like this IRL.

I don't mean they'll say "O-M-G", it would be said in the full form.

Simply because it is an abbreviation, I don't see that big problem with using it.

Metagaming is Using OOC Knowledge and applying it IC, Classic Example: Calling you in /l by your name because I just saw it on your head, But IC I do not know you at all, We've never met before. So what has Metagaming to do with Bunnyhopping? It is Powergaming.

Bunny-Hopping is not metagaming, it is also not powergaming.
Some say it is not roleplay, some say it is.
Bunny-Hopping is Bunny-Hopping. Its the fastest way to travel, get used to it.

And I have seen people use "Oh Em Gee", or the more common "Ommmgh" (which I use a lot). I also say W-T-F and spell the letters sometimes. So, that fine for me. That said, I wouldn't ever hear a Yakuza Kumicho lining his speech with internet terms, so I refrain from use in roleplay situations.

Now, I am going to be very harsh and quote your whole post, putting an Argonath spin on things. Sorry.

Kinda good idea, but to be honest most people tend to just have the gun out anyway. Also, I tend to carry Double Micro Uzis, an AK-47 Assault Rifle, a Combat Shotgun, and sometimes on top of those a Sniper or Country Rifle. I'm not exactly going to load each one for use if I switch.

I commonly use dual weapons, particularly the Micro SMG. It is useful as a defense against other dual-wield weapons, and it complements my long range Combat Shotgun well. Also, it is a very good weapon for my Rambo-Style fighting techniques. I'm not gonna ditch all of the jogging-SMGs (i.e. you can shoot them without planting feet) just because they are dual-wield. That said, Sawn-off Shotguns are a little stupid, as they can kill in one lucky body shot if you are caught by surprise.

3. Police driving random vehicles.
- Do not drive random vehicles thinking your undercover. If there are not enough police cruisers around, then take a ride from an Officer who does have one. Try not to use Cheetah's for chasing down suspects because that is very unrealistic.

I agree that Police should use Cruisers, Rangers, and HPVs for Patrols, and technically for chases also. But in the end, its far more effective gameplay-wise to have a ton of random cars then like 2 cruisers full of cops. Sadly, there are not enough Police vehicles for everyone to use, but I personally prefer to patrol alone anyway (always been my style, as an old DPD Officer from last year.)

As I mentioned above, I do lace my real speech with actual abbreviations, and do actually say the following:
"Stehfoo", "Loll", "Ommmgh", "Dubble-You-Tee-Eff", "Luhmao". Even so, the character I play is not me. The character I play does not speak this way, so I try to refrain from using them if possible, unless I switch to an OOC mode.

5. Bunny hopping
- I class this as a form of Metagaming, getting an advantage over other players, although anyone can use it, for instance look out of your window. Do you see any people hopping down the street? No, didn't think so. So please refrane from using 'Bunny hopping' and just tap the sprint button and you will still go pretty fast.

People are not going to be put at a disadvantage to their gameplay for the sake of roleplay. I'm not gonna "RP more" and then get shot by the hopping cops. Its one of those touchy subjects that some people hate, but I feel is actually more RP - in its idea. Sure, the idea of hopping around is not real by any means, but there is a certain skill to actually learning how to sprint fast IRL, and this certain skill in GTA is hopping. You are running as fast as possible - hence, RP. Thats my take on it, anyway.

Similarly, I'm not gonna pretend I can't see someone, when they are blatantly there on my map, therefore putting myself at a disadvantage. Nobody would. Argonath is not one of those magical places, like.. uh.. Disneyland - where everyone is perfect and plays by the rules. People will metagame if it suits them, everyone does it at some time or another, even if they don't intend to. For example, if you see a typo in main chat of the Police radio, and you see they are setting you up, despite being OOC - who is their right mind would go ahead and be set up. And even if you did go, you would still know, as a person at a computer, that it was a set up - in the back of your head, you'd be ready for it.

7. OOC and IC confusion
- Some people I roleplay with ingame get confused with 'In Character' and 'Out Of Character' chat when they are using the "/l" command. All you need to do is put some (( brackets )) around your speech during roleplay. It is very easy and I hope most of you use this technique.
*/l (( I like roleplaying ))
*/l I like roleplaying

This is a very touchy subject for me, because I find the (( )) OOC tags a complete pile of crap, in almost every fashion. I intentionally do not use them ingame, because they frankly look so ridiculous to me. Hence, when I make an OOC message, I make it fairly obvious that it is NOT IC. Either through the use of chat language, multiple smileys (which, by the way, can be used in IC /l also), or through other means. Sometimes, its fairly blatant and people do get confused. Sorry, too bad, I think I made it pretty clear when I'm OOC and IC.

This is something very strange, but now and again its fun to do something stupid. Its a game, thats the whole point. However, continuous actions of this kind can get really annoying. An example of a good random roleplay was the zombie outbreak, which when viewed from a fun-ruining-kinda-guy's eyes was essentially a TDM with one team shouting "Brainss!!!" a lot. This was a random ass roleplay which lasted for hours, but everybody found it fun..

Even so, I do prefer to stick to one role, since I cannot changename and as such cannot change roles (and yes, a tag does decide your character - if your nametag says something like "Carl_Johnson" then I won't go like "Hey Ran Fa Li." because thats really.. counter-intuitive.). As a result of constantly being in the Araatus character, I sometimes have to switch IC when doing OOC stuff. Like today was a really good example. SWAT came and ambushed us at San Fierro, and we had a good fight. We had a meetup later (which was really, really un-RP but cool) and the SWAT came and.. had lunch at our Bistro. However, the Corleones came in and we had to try and explain all the cops in our Bistro, even though they were there OOC.

9. Attempt during roleplay
- Try using '/me attempts to grab John.' and not things like '/me grabs John punches him in the face and karate kicks him in the balls'. Sad to say it is just not realistic. Try giving each other a chance during roleplay by using the "attempt" method.

Agree, but not as simply as you say. You say I should "attempt to grab him" instead of "grab him and punch him and karate kick him in the balls". How about simply "grab him", and then give him a chance to react. To be honest, the situations I'm in when I use such extreme /me commands are usually very one-sided (i.e. - loads of Yakuza on one little guy) and as a result the success of the roleplay in my favour is assured, but a smart roleplayer on the other end can at least make me look stupid, or something.

Agree, only arrest if you see the guy. If you didn't see it, and try to arrest using the metagaming, at least come up with some complex excuse of you smelling the smoke, or seeing the smoke, or something. Nothing more to say IMO.

Again, as much as I'd like to hotwire cars, I can't type like the speed of light, and I'm not gonna die in a cop chase and be randomly jailed by new freecops for trying to swiftly type /me commands to hotwire the thing.

12. Invincible
- Some players think they are superman, they have a gun pointed at there face and just hit the robber and run. Seriously act right! If you have a gun in your face, act scared!

I know what you mean, but I only ever see it from the back of the gun. People are surrounded by Katanas to their throat, like 5, 6 or 7 Yakuza guys around, and a gun in their face, and they just spit at us and run away (and often survive for awhile due to the actual difficulty of shooting a freakishly fast target who is zigzagging away). This royally pisses me off, because its just so darned un-RP. If some guy tries to rob me, however, yes - I am invincible in that respect. I'm the leader of the Yakuza. I can just whip out my sword and chop off his head, if I want. So I don't get robbed easily, unless there are at least 4 heavily armed guys, and even then usually only if they are organised crime (i.e. not street gangs). Street Gang thugs annoy me, and roleplay-wise we go by it that they suck at fighting compared to Mafia members in general (which the vast majority do) and therefore I will fight back, probably killing them all or forcing them to flee in terror.

I agree with Panda here, we are not all 1337 typers.

Ya, I can understand what Panda is talking with the police chase think... I personally don't care if someone uses the /me commands or not though I do use them majority of the time.

But, about the ancornym thing, Ya, I have hear people use them in real life and such... Hell, I've used them from time to time, but things like LMAO and LOL, don't really work in /l as much as WTF or FFS.

Also, on the bunnyhopping, it was never not allowed and is viewed by some as bad RP, but if you as a human found a way to go fast then running, you are telling me you wouldn't use it?

Italian police has a blue Lambo, in Estonia, there are Subarus and stuff for police. How do you catch a cheetah on a speedway with a police cruiser or a bike? Well, bikes don't really matter in police chases at all, you can't take a suspect off track if you are alone. If there are 2 officers on the bike, you can't use "slow-mode" and can't catch the suspect.

Hello, if you read this, you are cool! Soo...read this...or else...uhm...i don't actually know what i'm gonna do with you...probably...shoot you.

Of the jumping, already laws of physics are defied, jumping is faster then running and you cannot make everyone not do it, if one person does it, other does so he doesn't have advantage, in the end, so what, you make things more complicated to restrict, you can still catch bullets in the back. Moreover, someone could just attribute that with some kind of erratic dodging movement (even though it's not exact same, still). I generally do not jump if chasing someone, only if they do, but if they do I am not going to complain, it is already unrealistic and there is no rule against it.

The only fix for this is put it back to normal run speed, you cannot make everyone to not jump.

I never jump while chasing someone, no matter if he is jumping or not. I only tell him that his RP sox and continue with mah own RP. It is nothing like power or metagaming, it's just awful RP. :)
