Pipe smokers and Cigar smokers actually are usually NOT addicted to the tobacco and do not have a high risk for lung cancer because when you smoke these things, you don't habitually inhale. You puff instead. Where as in cigarettes ( and other things ) you do. The biggest risk is mouth cancer and my grandfather smoked a pipe for like 40 years and then quit. He never developed this cancer. Also, the regular pipe smoker usually doesn't smoke more than once a day or so. Cigarettes. A pack a day. Cigars are about the same way as pipes. Also, the nicotine is literally fermented out of cigar and pipe tobacco. Therefore, it is less dangerous and there is low low LOW risk for addiction.
HOWEVER, you are definitley not bullet proof if you smoke a pipe instead of a cigarette. You can develop some types of cancer in the mouth and back of throat. As stated before, if you inhale anything foreign to the human body except for good ol' air, then you risk some health problems. I actually am not going to start smoking a pipe a lot. Maybe just once in a great BIG while.
