Very true, alliances are built on who can offer what for the good of the goverments, however I refer to a soldiers state of mind; they don't sign up with the intention of helping only those countries that would benefit their own goverment - they help the civilians, protect who they can and so on, unfortunetly the majority of bastards that lead our goverment today are responsible for that, the soldiers will follow orders to an extent but atleast some aid does each the civilians; business deal or not, even if it's just a ploy so the media can see the goverment act - I have no interest in speaking for any goverment, only the soldiers that are in the military, I think we've been missing that, i didn't realise you where talking about the goverments, when I talk about the military I generaly think about the men and women that work inside it, the true power of the army, not the fat guys in suits. :P
There are many reasons why someone will join the army. Of course the image of protecting and helping is the one that is shown in commercials.
In reality it depends in which division you will work. Some are actually for help.
But in general the function of soldiers is to take a gun and fight. That is their job, and if you join the army you know you run the risk of having to do that.
Yes you can officially choose not to go. But that will not get you anywhere as career. If you are not prepared for having to use weapons and kill people or being shot at by someone willing to kill you, better stay away from the army. And once you see the first person killed by guns IRL, there is no way back.

James,
the reality is that true power is in hands of fat guys in suits... If fat guy will say "ok guys now we stop this war and withdraw our troops from this lands", Army has to obey the order... If he says "ok guys go and attack" they will go and attack...
And even more... Can be that soldiers have no really idea where they go and what for... Like the story with some troops of some small country: They were told that their general is in trouble and they need to go to some village... In the town they got into the fight... They had no idea that government announced a war against territories they were sent to...

 :(

nope, not interested in the whole military thing. i have an interest for guns and stuff (infact i have a cap gun next to me :P ), but the thought of going through years of training to possibly be killed in 10 seconds..nar. i'll be working in an office job making 500k a year.

Man, they dont know have idea what re they discussing, believe me...Its easy sitting behind PC and talking(will not say harder word) about what they saw on the TV, but noone of them didnt see the war in their lifes yet. I havent been in war also, but my country was twice for my life and i hope never anymore. First time when i had 1 year and second time when i had 8 years, and i remember this second one very good..I hope will not be repeated to anyone

And yeah, true u can be killed in 10 seconds and what u did? Nothing!! How many young ppl died for nothing..

Personally at this point and time i wouldnt consider joining the military
im just not the "fighting" Type
not to mention the army is under control by one of the [moderated]
if i ever decided to join something probally move back to england first
Hum, interesting, I'm curious, do you consider yourself an American or a Englishman. Cause in Sweden for example we have allot of people who has parents that aren't from Sweden, and I've always wondered whether they consider Sweden their home or wherever their parents come from their home. And which Army would they choose if they had to?

It's always been on my mind...

I aint santa... Ive got something for the bad bitches too.

If you are not going to fight other country - does not matter which Army you wanna join... I do not think there is a very big difference, as nowadays Army is just a job like other jobs... I do not talk about hot events like wars... And Brains is right, many of those who wanna go to army and imagine that they run with guns and shoot, have no idea what is war...

Yeah I know that, kinda hard to hide a war though - goverments that try to do that, well it usually comes around and bites them in the arse, that story sounds outragous - which goverment would send troops in a rescue operation and state that they had declared open war until after the operation! Which ever Goverment that was sounds really pathetic. By the way, Rob; hope you learnt that these types of threads always spark of deep conversations about war and politics haha, never can be avoided i'm afraid!

P.S. Anyone saying ''They have no idea what war is like'' - ofcourse they don't, no-one does until they experience it, that doesn't mean they can't talk about it though, it involves them entirely with their tax going there, their army which involve many freinds, family and so on and like a lot of us here could be considering future careers into it.

I was near the Government House in Moscow when Hazbulatov was trying to make a revolution against Eltsin... We were walking along the alley when suddenly started shootings... That was evening and I saw the bullets traces... People started running to all sides, hiding in bushes, everywhere was chaos... I can say you - all the world is changing in front of your eyes when you see a guy with the gun who thinks he can kill you for ideals of his government/general...

One by one dieing TV channels, radio stations, people are talking rumors, tanks on the streets, helicopters, shots, explosions, warnings to close windows and lay on the floor cos of snipers...
Even such things can change the mind of people from "I wanna join army" to "who wants all this wars?"...

Uhm ???
Extremist rebels from Russa ? Impossible they were peace keepers.
Extremist rebels from Georgia ? Strange to describe an army that way
Extremist rebels from Ossetia ? They are citizens living there for hundreds of years.

Don't know if you have been reading the Sun, but I would advise a better quality news source.  :D

what in the flying f**k do you know about michael jackson? he probably never molested children, it was just a person who wanted his money who said that he was molesting children that came into his house. and there is no proof that he did.

look at South Park Mexican, he went to jail because he raped a 7 year old. and he didn't, no proof, no, witnesses, and the girl was paid to testify against him.. and she was at his daughter's house watching a horror movie about a guy raping little firls. and she probable dreamed she was getting RAPED. and guess what? SPM got 40 years.. when "other" serial rapists only get 7-15 years! WTF??
