The purpose is entertainment... Giving something back to the people that have uploaded millions of videos over the years.

yeah i think the giving back to the uploaders was all the shit changes they made to the site, eg: the thumbs up thinbs down system... so this is more likely a "sorry but we are not taking it away. thumbs ftw!!!" look at the nice colours and they are distracted
