Born in Brooklyn, New York, Hoffmann grew up near the Brooklyn Navy Yard and attended a Catholic grammar school run by Irish-American brothers. Hoffmann's criminal career started at age 14, when he beat another boy with brass knuckles. At age 15, he dropped out of high school. In 1951, during the Korean War, Hoffmann served two years as a volunteer in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. After Hoffmann returned to Brooklyn, he got married. He and his wife had five children.Hoffmann became a Gvardia associate during the 1950s when the family was headed by Giuseppe Ancelotti. In 1959, Hoffmann met future Gvardia Don Coffiliano Gvardia. In the 1960's, Hoffmann was convicted on drug-related charges and spent several years in prison. After his release, Hoffmann returned to the Gvardia family, which was then run by the same Don Coffiliano. On August 23, 1982, Hoffmann became a made man in the Gvardia family and a soldier in the Brooklyn-based crew of caporegime Xander.Hoffmann became involved in bookmaking, loansharking, occasional drug deals and other criminal activities. During his criminal career, Hoffmann would be involved in ten murders. His criminal record would include extortion, murder, murder conspiracy, robbery, arson, tax evasion, counterfeiting, narcotics trafficking, burglary, hijacking and assault. In 1983, Hoffmann was convicted of heroin trafficking and was sentenced to several years in prison. He was released in 1986.In August 1990 Hoffmann facilitated the murder of Stracci mobster Danny.
