Paper tower...

I'm not sure if this is appropriate to be in this section, but I think Speaker box is the most suitable section of the forums... I might be wrong, if so, please move this thread.

We have an extra day in 'Computer Engineering and Designs' and we're going to do a one-period long project -- We're going to be given two normal sheets of 8x11 printing paper, 18 inches worth of masking tape, a pair of scissors, and a ruler. We're supposed to build a paper tower that stands 30 inches on its own.

My partner and I are currently looking for some good ideas, and I would like to ask some of you to help us.

Any logical ideas would be much appreciated.

My partner and I only get two pieces of regular printing paper. I doubt that a guard tower is possible...

Hmm, please explain your 'Square box' theory. How will it be formed?

Well, like I said, I'm limited to two pieces of printing paper, 8x11. I'm not 100% sure what you are talking about... Can you please tell me how you would create the 'box'?

Maybe cut the paper and bend and glue it so you will have a stabile framework-like box?

Hm.. Well, my friend and I were thinking about creating a small tripod base, then begin to build the tower higher and higher. If that fails, we're thinking of cutting thin pieces of paper, preferably 5/16", and fold them to make triangular beams, and build the tower higher from there. We think that a triangular shaped beam would be more stable, compared to a cylinder shaped beam. Well, those are our two best ideas so far. Can anyone else contribute?

I did something like this, except I couldnt use tape.... Why dont you just make 2 funnels and tape them together?

make like a tall thin tower with a slighty larger base so it is like a stretched pyramid with the top cut off and then just a straight up-and-down tower on top of that.

Check the Eiffel tower design.

As base make 'pillars' from rolled up cuttings. Reinforce them by arches to distribute the weight. Use 'platforms' to buil modular so that you can stack a couple of parts to a higher tower.

I do not see how you can make the eiffel tower with 2 pieces of paper... *starts getting interested*
Considering it's supposed to be 30 inches and stand on its own...
