You don't necessarily have to shave it, heavy trim does the job as well.

Well no, it's a common misconception that shaving facial hair makes it come back in greater quantity, harder and faster.
When you shave, the roots of your hairs become visible. The roots are thicker than the end of the hair which makes it look more dense after shaving. But truly shaving doesn't change anything related to hair growth.
