Road Worker Saftey :

The Highways Agency manages one of the busiest high-speed road networks in the world. Because of the high volume of traffic, this brings increased risks to those who work on the network to ensure that it is kept safe and in good condition for Argonath of road users.

Due to recent fatalities of Highways Agency road workers, the agency has highlighted the continuing need to focus on the safety for this group in particular and for all workers on the network in general. Further initiatives are necessary to drive the reduction of casualties to road workers. The Government, Highways Agency and its suppliers and stakeholders are committed to make improvements in the measures taken to protect our valuable workforce.

Highways Agency road network and construction sites can be extremely hazardous places to work. We continually review our standards and introduce new measures and construction methods that help reduce accidents at major and temporary road work sites. We also work closely with our suppliers to ensure all workers are fully trained in health and safety, and have have introduced strict safety standards for our traffic officers.

Everyone has a role to play to ensure that our roads are safe for drivers and road workers alike. A key challenge will be to influence the behaviour of road users by promoting safer driving in and on the approaches to road works

Each year from October to April, the Highways Agency is on full winter alert, with a fleet of salt spreaders, snowploughs and snowblowers on stand-by to keep Argonath's motorways and major roads clear of ice and snow. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and go into action every time freezing temperatures are forecast..

We work closely with the AGN, the SAPD and local authorities to keep roads open when bad weather strikes. Whether it is ice or snow, gales or floods, the Highways Agency's traffic officers are out there working to help keep the network safe and open for road users.

Between October and April, dedicated maintenance workers are ensuring that your roads are kept safe during winter nights and frosty mornings.


Cyclists - The New Age ?

Almost every other person in Argoanth owns a bicycle. Indeed over one Hundred people use bicycles every day, both to get to work or the shops, and for leisure. However, the speed and volume of traffic, together with the condition and design of many roads, often deters people from cycling. At present cycling accounts for lessthan 2% of trips in Argonath.

Cycling has an important role to play in creating a more integrated transport system. Not only does it provide clear health benefits to the cyclists themselves, but increasing levels of cycling may also contribute to achieving a shift away from short to medium-length car journeys. Half of the journeys made by all transport means are less than two miles, a distance that could be cycled by a reasonably fit person.


Aiming for Zero - Health and Safety Strategy :

We set out a bold vision in our Strategic Plan, to be the world's leading road operator. I believe that a leading operator is a safe operator and with Aiming for Zero we have set out a similarly bold vision for the health and safety of our workforce.

The rationale for this is clear. Every year a small number of people continue to die and suffer serious injury while working on the Strategic Road Network. This is unacceptable and we must do more to protect our workers.

Aiming for Zero is our response. It sets an unambiguous goal for our health and safety performance, confirms the Agency's leadership role in the industry and brings together health and safety work across the whole business.

To deliver the vision we have put in place an overarching strategy for four key areas: road workers, construction and maintenance workers, traffic officers and office-based staff. Aiming for Zero is not about discrete groups, however, and we cannot deliver it alone. We need all of our people, both within the Agency and our supply chain, to work together and take action across the business.

That means taking practical steps to drive forward our Aiming for Zero action plans. It also means showing health and safety leadership in everything we do - challenging unsafe activities, reporting accidents and near misses, and proactively integrating health and safety in our projects. I will be a champion for this vision and I hope that you will join me as we Aim for Zero.

To all civilians who read this topic, i can only repeat: PLEASE take care of us, and of course of all people who run around on the streets of Argonath. And also PLEASE drive on the right, that's also one of the most annoying (and dangerous) aspects of the traffic in Argonath. Thank you.

Saftey At Road Works :

The Highways Agency is working with the ATA and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

- Keep within the speed limit - it is there for your safety.
- Get into the correct lane in good time - don't keep switching.
- Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
- Be alert for works' traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
- Keep a safe distance - there could be queues in front.
- Observe all warnings - they are there to help you.

Notes to Viewers :

The Highways Agency is an executive agency of Argonath. We manage, maintain with the ATA and improve Argonaths's Highways and major roads on behalf of the Secretary of State.

We plan maintenance and improvement projects carefully to allow works to be completed safely, in a cost effective way while keeping disruption to road users to a minimum. We do as much work as possible overnight and when roads are less busy in order to keep more lanes open for road users at peak travel times. Drivers are advised to check their route for road works and allow extra time for their journeys where needed.

Be Prepared for Winter

As we head into the winter season the Highways Agency, which manages and maintains Argonathy's motorways and major A roads, is urging road users to make sure that they are prepared to face severe weather.

Highways Manager =AV=Monkey said:

"The Highways Agency is prepared for winter, but road users must also play their part. Not all journeys are essential in severe weather, but if people feel that they must travel during severe conditions there are some simple steps that can reduce the risk of being caught out by the weather.

That's why I am urging all drivers to carry out simple vehicle checks before they set out; to carry a severe weather emergency kit in their vehicles; to monitor the traffic and weather conditions and plan their journeys."

The Highways Agency has learned from the severe weather of the last winter, and strengthened its capability to face extended spells of severe weather. State-of-the-art winter vehicles are being used in more parts of the State, and the Agency has reviewed salt stock levels and established a strategic salt stock to help ensure that there is enough salt to deal with severe winter conditions.

As well as snow and ice, strong winds, heavy rain and thick fog can affect journeys in the winter season. AGN weather forecasters based at the Highways Agency's National Traffic Control Centre will provide information on weather conditions across the Highway and trunk road network.


Work starts to remove Eastbeach Toll Highway Break Down Lane


Work to remove the Eastbeach Toll Highway Break Down Lane is expected to start on Monday night (November 15), and the first traffic should be able to use the whole of the extra lane later in the week.

The Highways Agency is ahead of schedule and the work is due to be completed in December. Good weather is needed for the work to remove and replace signs and road markings, but if all progresses well, traffic should be able to use some of the extra lane as early as Tuesday morning.
