Hey, this is a big problem at the moment.

No matter what  I choose from the list, the file comes out in strange characters :(.

That is more than likely a corrupt document, I have had that issue before.

Try transferring the document to a PC that has Word 2007 on it and open it there, see if it works.
If it does, then try reinstalling Word 2010.
The issue may be some "converting driver" type of thing since Word 2010 documents are saved as ".docx" where as Word 2007 saves documents as ".doc"



Is it a file you are trying to import into Word, if so what format is that file?

files that do not open on 2010 = 97-2003

then download Word 2003 viewer and open it in there. but Office '10 opens 97-03 documents just fine. you can even Save as 97-03 in '10
