so a=18

or

a^1 + a^7 - a^10 = -36 which is outrageously negative. and not worth working out.

Yeah, its quite shocking to see how many people over the age of 11 got that question wrong...
They were answering it step-by-step, which should have been corrected in primary school (under 11).

There is no rule that you have to do division before multiplication or vice versa. Same with addition and substraction.

Dude, you're challenging a guy who has been the top of his class for the past five years. It is BIDMAS. I don't give a crap about technicalities, as that is what I am going by. Got a problem? Go get a tissue, BIDMAS works for me and many others, so you can shove it  :D
