ARGENTINA'S president blasted Britain's "ridiculous and absurd" stance on the Falklands last night as both countries marked the 30th anniversary of the start of the war between them. [Read more]

But can Britain defend the Falklands if an attack is assembled? [Read more]

Argentina won't assemble any attack - the power disparity between Argentina and United Kingdom militaries is probably bigger than in 1982.

The invasion on Falklands was simply a desperate attempt of the US-installed military dictatorship in Argentina which, just like the military dictatorships also installed by United States in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, was made of amateurs. They were trying to regain prestige which they lost from all the damage they did to the country.

We're letting the residents choose what they want, the result of which is a pretty much unanimous decision to remain British.

The Argentinian president should probably stop being such a stupid bitch, especially on an occasion where we're meant to remember those that were killed by the Argentinian invasion (argentines included).

I heard the whole Falklands fuss is because of reported oil reserves in the area.

If that is true, you should be glad you are fighting with a politically autonomous Argentina as all the USA-installed dictatorships in South America are gone (though what the countries suffered with the US interventions will still affect us for the next 20-50 years), else they'd be using their puppet dictatorships to steal the island off your dominion.

the UK has been drastically cutting down on their military force. They removed a ton of their land vehicles from service etc etc. If Argentina wanted to do something, now is the time. Britain does not have the finances or the political support to start another conflict that far from their homeland.

This would be true if it weren't for the inevitable economic sanctions that the UN would smash Argentina with for openly invading British soil.

Also there are over a thousand troops stationed on the Falklands, along with aircraft.

Economic sanctions would only take place if all main members of the UN agreed to it. if anything, Russia (Maybe even the US) at the very least would veto any sanctions against them. As for military strength, there are only 500 enlisted personnel in the area, and they only have 4 aircraft stationed at the airbase.... 4 Eurofighters.... Seems like a great defence force i you ask me :P

1,200 British Army Garrisoned.

Rumored to be a Nuclear Sub-marine in the area

"The Falklands War was 30 years ago. "But in military terms it is 100 years ago," says Clarke. British forces have advanced about 60 years in sophistication, but Argentine forces have barely improved, still using military hardware from the 1970s and 80s."

Why does Britain need some dots on a map on theother side ofthe world if it causes such hate ?

We are greedy. Just like all the other countries we still own.

It dates back to the dates of the British empire, it's just like various countries still have the Queen as head of state, it's a very silly Monarchist system really.

Take Gibraltar as an example.. it causes massive diplomatic tension between us and Spain.

But then again.. they choose to remain British..

Among other reasons, I think the most important one is that the residents there should have the right to decide their own national identity.
