And while Jay is right (Argentine settlers got kicked out the island in 1833), it's been 180 years, it's a bit too late to claim the islands back. Enforcing the claims right now is sabre rattling to distract the Argentine population of the real problems we've got. I can't speak for Britain but I heard it's a bit the same over there.

Spain never once had a valid claim to the territory, so I fail to see the argument you're trying to make. From their very discovery the islands were either essentially non-colonised by civilians (but with military claim contested primarily between Britain and Spain) or colonised by the British. Spain never made it "part of their country" in the way you're implying.

Well, they're already self-governing, so I don't see what advantage they would seek to gain through total independence. If anything, that would prompt Argentina to invade them since Britain would no longer be responsible for their defence.
