A Government ban on tobacco advertising comes into effect from Friday (April 6), in an effort to cut down smoking rates in parts of the UK, particularly amongst the young.

All large shops and supermarkets in England must now cover tobacco products from public view, with smaller outlets being given three more years to adapt to the new legislation.

The Department of Health said the move was in response to evidence that cigarette displays in shops can encourage young people to take up the habit.

Over 300,000 children under 16 smoke each year and five per cent of children aged 11 to 15 are regular smokers, according to its figures. In addition, 39 per cent of smokers say they began before the age of 16.

Health Minister Anne Milton said: "We cannot ignore the fact that young people are recruited into smoking by colourful, eye-catching, cigarette displays.

"Most adult smokers started smoking as teenagers and we need to stop this trend.

"Banning displays of cigarettes and tobacco will help young people resist the pressure to start smoking and help the thousands of adults in England who are currently trying to quit."

Any stores found to be breaking the new legislation face a fine of up to 5,000, or even a prison sentence.

I don't think this will stop anything; at all, if anything it just inconviences retailers.
Thoughts?

Calculate the amount of taxes smokers earn for the government and you will understand why they do not really want to stop it.

Snus is sold in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland (Not sure on Iceland and Denmark). It is maily produced in Sweden, but I think. You dont put snus in your mouth and suck it, you put it under lip and let the nicotine and the taste of snus do its job. Snus is not stronger, thinking off the smoke and the tar which stays in your lungs from smoking.

I am sexy

Might stop those too nervous to actually purchase for the first time, although this might be exclusive to shy as fuck people.

Good idea, really.

Will not stop anything. Children see their friends and family members smoke and that itself can be enough encouragement. Having said that though multiple friends and members of my family smoke whereas i do not.

Well, England is quite certainly moving towards the exceptional yet ludicrous story of V from Vendetta.

These days, everything should be hidden.. Like state money should be hidden from politicians.

As for young people, I think they should rather take on the parents, who are responsible for the kid instead of disallowing the person itself by taking away cigarettes out of public sight. This affects also other groups of humans that do not belong to the descibed group from this news item.

In fact, based upon their ways of dealing with things, they should also start by taking away cell phones, games, nutrition, fast-food etc, as all of these things have a certain level of health risks bound to them. It is up to the parents to make sure their child stay in proper lines, if not, take more actions against parents.

As many others said, it doesn't change much, but it certainly won't increase the purchase of the ciggarettes. And that's not bad at all
