Donald Trump's Miss Universe contest on Tuesday threw open its doors to transgender models, allowing men who have had a sex change the chance to be crowned the world's most beautiful woman. The transgender contestants will be able to strut their stuff in the international beauty championships starting in 2013, while pioneering sex-change model Jenna Talackova will be allowed to take part this year, said gay and transgender rights organization GLAAD.

"The Miss Universe Organization today follows institutions that have taken a stand against discrimination of transgender women including the Olympics," said Herndon Graddick, a spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

"At a time when transgender people are still routinely denied equal opportunities in housing, employment and medical care, today's decision is in line with the growing levels of public support for transgender people across the country.

Jenna Talackova, transsexual model, giving a
conference in Los Angeles las April 3, 2012.
Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, said on GLAAD's website: "We have a long history of supporting equality for all women, and this was something we took very seriously."

The reversal of longstanding policy followed a campaign by Talackova, a statuesque, blonde transgender model from Canada, who says she underwent surgery to become a woman because she was born in "the wrong body." The Miss Universe organization, owned by flamboyant and controversial real estate magnate Trump, cited a rule that contestants, who appear before judges in a variety of gowns and skimpy clothing, must be "naturally born" women.

Backed by GLAAD and celebrity feminist lawyer Gloria Allred, Talackova took on the system, arguing, as Allred said, that "she did not ask Mr Trump to prove that he is a naturally born man. Or to see the photos of his birth to view his anatomy to prove that he was male."

Talackova, 23, underwent her sex change operation when she was 19 and is identified on her Canadian passport as a woman. Miss Universe gave in last week, saying it would "allow Jenna Talackova to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant provided she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions." Tuesday's announcement saw that ruling expanded to include all transgender beauty hopefuls.

Miss Universe is "close to finalizing" the wording of the new policy but it "includes transgender women in time for the start of this fall's 2013 pageant season; a time when most of the competitions around the world begin to take place."

The entry of transgender contestants does not actually mean that any woman can vie for the crown. Not only must hopefuls be between 18 and 26 years old, one major taboo remains: motherhood.

"No, contestants may not be married or pregnant," the missuniverse.com/missusa website says.

"They must not have ever been married, not had a marriage annulled nor given birth to, or parented, a child. The titleholders are also required to remain single throughout their reign."

The 2011 Miss Universe winner was 25-year-old Leila Lopes, Miss Angola, who told judges she was so beautiful she "wouldn't change a thing," but her best trait was her "inner beauty."

In my opinion, this is just fucking ridiculous. Giving equal rights to LGBT individuals is one thing, allowing them to join Ms. Universe is another.

Before someone accuses me of discriminating on homosexuals, I would like to point out that homosexuals themselves have spoken out against the matter. Ms. Universe has always been a contest for finding the most beautiful and natural-born women, not creating them through thousands of dollars spent on hormonal treatments, breast implants, and sex-change operations.

I believe this is an abomination to all natural-born women. Homosexuals have always held their own beauty pageants anyways, and could make a pageant for homosexuals with publicity on a similar level to Ms. Universe itself, and women do not go around lobbying for rights to be admitted into homosexual / transsexual pageants.

This is just fucking ridiculous.

Thoughts?

Soon the bets would be less on who would win, and more on if the winner's an actual female.

My thoughts. It seems to me you don't know the difference between transgender and homosexuals. Also it seems to me that you are saying that money can buy the best looks in the world.

PS - I do like that this news got the most coverage in Philippines, probably because it matters the most in there (and Thailand).

And we do not try to be real life, as why would you ever play real life if you have one ? We play the GTA universe, and our players should try to live in the GTA world, not the real one.

As Jubin posted, you don't know the difference between transgender people and homosexuals....

Frankly I see this as an amazing step for not just the United States but for human rights in general. I am proud to see the Americans stepping up and helping move western society forward.

Also, anyone who argues that transgender people are "Fake" women because of operations should not be eligible because of said operations is incredibly ignorant. none of these women in these pagents are completely natural. At the very least there is some botox going on...

Anyone who is against the development of LGBT rights in society is living in the dark ages and needs to wake up and educate themselves.

I'm not against strannys but I still find it grose they are competing in a WOMENS events, they were not born female and so should not be considered it.

Transgender people often times have brain development that reflects those of the normal female human. So in essence, they are mentally female, just not born physically female.

There's a big difference between homosexuals and transgenders. Not all transgenders are homosexuals.

The Philippines is not exactly a consistent front-runner in the Ms. Universe pageant, but our winners came from a time when there were no enhancements such as botox and the like, and they were still as beautiful as the contestants of today. This is why I believe there are still natural-born women with natural beauty competing in global pageants such as Ms. Universe.

I am not against LGBT rights (although I find gay pride parades where men walk around wearing almost nothing and kissing / sucking each other off in the middle of the highway), but pageants such as Ms. Universe are meant to find the most beautiful natural-born women, not the most surgically-enhanced transsexuals.

They can make a separate pageant for transsexuals, but is it really necessary to dilute Ms. Universe contestants with transsexuals? Giving "equal rights" to one party does not mean insulting the rights of another, neither do you see lesbians/transsexuals undertaking "human rights movements" to allow them to compete in global bodybuilding pageants for men.

The most important part is interacting with others and meeting people from around the world.
