If something is scary and causes pain or loud noises, then toddlers would pretty much know to be traumatized by it.

Such as fire, guns, and people in monster suits.

Yes, but loud noises don't usually spell out 'mass pain or death' which is what the father experienced whilst his toddler was shooting him.
