Believe it or not, many U.S. soldiers that come back from war hate the military for the things they see and are forced to do when overseas.

Not all soldiers love their countries governments. If fat asses in suits forced you to go abroad and hurt innocent people as opposed to honestly protecting the peace, you will hate your government too, unless something is wrong with your brain mechanisms.

Flags upside-down have been signs of protest, disrespect, and such. It's an alternative to stepping on the flag or burning it, which is on another level.

If I recall correctly, an upside-down flag represents chaos, which in this case could represent his state of mind or whatever he's been involved in during whatever war he may (or may not (yet)) have fought.

I believe the soldier is not presenting the flag as a form of protest. I remember reading somewhere that it was being held as evidence of someone else vandalizing the flag, and being photographed for records. There is no context; we can only make assumptions.

EDIT:

I think I was just amped up because it's not dissent at all, but a recruiter showing a defaced flag (legitimate dissent for civilians) for a photo recording the incident. The photo may have been leaked from the police agency that took the report, who knows. It's a flag that was hung from a recruiting offices front windows by (presumably) a civilian overnight.

I'm going to tell you right now what this picture is exactly of. It shows a recruiter holding up a flag defaced by protesters left outside a recruitment office. He's holding it up so that another recruiter can take snap a picture of this to file a police report. As a military recruiter who had to deal with people vandalizing my office, I think I have a closer connection to him than you do. But even then I don't purport to understand what he's thinking right at that moment, like you said, the medium doesn't allow for that. It's likely that he feels disgusted about the desecration of the flag regardless of what message was scrawled on there, I know I was.

But that doesn't matter. Whether it's activists scrawling f**k BUSH or George Bush writing f**k OSAMA, it doesn't matter. There is NO MESSAGE in this. It is but someone holding up a vandalized flag and another person taking a picture to fit into a police report. That's it. There's no intention. There's no meaning. No one is making a statement.
