Are they having a laugh at their own expense? Google wants to bring in .LOL web address (and requests 49 other names for a combined cost of nearly $10,000,000)

Next time you want a laugh, you might need to tap in .LOL at the end of the web address.
Google has applied for 50 new 'top-level domains' - the last few letters of a web address - to join the usual suspects such as .com, .co.uk, and .net.

Among the new applications are .google, .youtube, .doc, and - most amusingly - .lol, to indicate a site which will make you 'laugh out loud'.

But, with each of the 50 applications made to non-profit global co-ordinator ICANN costing $185,000, this - at a combined cost of $9,250,000 - may end up being a big joke at Google's own expense.

Technically google will decide who gets the domain, so unless they make the domain public(which i actually doubt) they will only approve a few websites.

Why wouldn't they? They would make hundreds of thousands, and eventually millions of dollars from selling .lol domains to the public.

Wrong. The holder of a TLD can sell domains to anyone they approve.
If a company feels that the domain and website is infringement of their copyright, they can go to Court and request transfer of the domain name.
