Neil deGrasse Tyson - We Stopped Dreaming (Episode 1)

We Stopped Dreaming (Episode 2) - A New Perspective

A movement was recently started to increase the US funding of NASA from .4% of the federal budget to a full 1%; that is, a penny on the tax dollar. The cause was more or less started by a Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist who pushes the idea that a resurgence of NASA programs could revive the US's interest in math, science, and, more importantly, the future.

Space travel and money spent on it is always a hot debate, there is the argument that we need to spend the money here on Earth but I personally think our advancements in space tech and exploration have always resulted in benefits to the average person base don developments of that same technology.

What do you think about this whole call for a higher NASA budget?

Reduce foreign aid, and put that into NASA development..

We're starting to fall behind on everything that we stand for back in the 20th century.

Where must we go... we who wander this Wasteland in search of our better selves?

Everything that was started in the 20th century is coming to fruition.

Foreign Aid is not properly distributed and in the right format anyway. There is nothing that says this money HAS to come from the aid budget though. The Military Budget would be a better option to take it from.

Move NASA away from things like climate hoaxing and let them do their core business.

Thats all about money, there current budget only allows them to pursue programs involving the climate. If they get a higher budget they can focus on SPACE instead of climate change and all that crap. Sure, its important, but other agencies do the same thing.

There is a lot worth learning out there in space. Sadly, they ll need more then a penny for a significant breakthrough.

If you watch the video you will understand just how much 1 penny of the American Tax Dollar really is. It would boost the budget back to that of which was used to get to the moon, and it shows that just 1 percent can allow for man to get to the moon in such a short time.

NASA is important because we're eventually going to fuck the earth to death, and if we're not in a position to abandon it and run to a different planet then we'll die as a race.

The (far less pessimistic) alternative is that we are able to set up some kind of orbital solar power generation systems (like in gundam 00 ) and use other planets as sources for mining. Both of those things again require a space program. It's a necessary thing.

IMO NASA should be focussing on things like propultion systems, not telescoping the galaxy for planets like earth and such with their 456089084868638476034986946billion dollar orbital telescopes, the sooner we find a new propultion system such as nuclear, plasma or maybe even dark matter (although it'd take 1million years to get a gram of dark matter at the moment) the better, why not just get the stuff to get you to other planets instead of looking for planets before we can even go there..

They say they plan a Mars mission to get 3 people on Mars by 2020, doubt it will happen since they arnt focussed enough on travel.
