Two U.S. men held at border for 2 hours over Kinder Eggs

SEATTLE -- Two Seattle men say they spent more than two hours in a detention centre at the Canadian border after U.S. border agents discovered illegal chocolate eggs in their car.
Brandon Loo and Christopher Sweeney told KOMO-TV they decided to bring home some treats for friends and family during a recent trip to Vancouver, British Columbia. They bought Kinder Eggs -- chocolate eggs with a toy inside.
The two men say border guards searched their car and said the eggs are illegal in the United States because young children could choke on the small plastic toys. Importing them can lead to a potentially hefty fine.
Sweeney says the bust was a waste of his time and the agents' time. The men eventually got off with a warning.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman declined to comment about the case Tuesday night.
The agency warned on its website around Easter that the treats can't be imported legally.
The agency says it seized more than 60,000 Kinder Eggs from travellers' baggage and international mail shipments in fiscal 2011.

I usually buy or request someone to bring a lot of these if they're in the UK. The chocolate is rather good.

The panel are each given a Hessian bag full of items and are asked which item is the most confiscated by United States customs. The bags contain Cuban cigars, tins of spam, chocolate eggs, used handkerchiefs, shoes with soil on them, counterfeit money, lottery tickets and seeds. The answer is the chocolate eggs, in particular those with toys inside them such as Kinder Eggs, because the small parts in the toys are a chocking risk. All of the items in the bag are confiscated too - including the bag which is made of hemp. Cuban cigars are the second most confiscated item. All imports from Cuba are banned by the USA, despite the fact that all UN nations except Israel and Palau have declared the American boycott of Cuban products illegal for 17 years in a row. You can go to prison for two years for smuggling lottery tickets into the USA.

When Americans go to and from Cuba, they often wear more clothes than they need so they can send people gifts, without them being seized by customs.

You can bring a flick knife (or a switchblade if you are American) into the USA if you only have one arm. Fishermen are used to using flick knifes because they can use it to cut fishing lines.

its not kinder eggs specifically. Its a law for ALL foods. No food in the US can have an inedible item inside it. Kinder Eggs could be an removed from that but as soon as you start giving way to companies then you get a flood of other requests to permit other things. Its a logical law, just kinder eggs happen to get screwed by it.
