I have grown to like the new "restrictions" even though at first it seemed a little small, now at least the page isn't filled by signatures larger than many of the posts.
The signatures weren't even that big compared to the ones now. There's no reason why 500x125 shouldn't be re-added.

The 500x125 ones weren't the issue that led to the restriction. The problem was that people were beginning to use massive signatures that spanned more area than their posts themselves.

If that's the case, no images should be allowed on signatures. Click on my image on my signature, it shows the actual size of the image. So, even with this current limited size, those "large images" will still be there.

The big complaint previously about signatures was about large .gif signatures which would take quite some time to load.
I can also recall Gandalf making a post about the size of the signatures being somewhat.

Here's a discussion about the size from some time back.

Administrators could easily remove those over-done gifs.

It seems that size was pretty much universally-liked, assuming the text lines couldn't be extended beyond 3 lines. That I can actually agree with too, as it is what most forums I've been to use. I would highly recommend nothing larger ever be considered, though.
