Sydney - Death threats have been made against the Australian radio hosts involved in the royal prank call tragedy, police said on Friday, with station management reportedly moving some staff to safehouses.

The revelations came as a London inquest showed the nurse who fielded the hoax call, Jacintha Saldanha, 46, hanged herself.

The mother-of-two was found dead last Friday, three days after transferring the call to a colleague who divulged details about Prince William's pregnant wife Catherine who was recovering from severe morning sickness.

Saldanha was discovered in nurses' quarters near the private King Edward VII's Hospital in central London where Kate was being treated. She also had wrist injuries and left three notes.

Bodyguards

Australian police have launched an investigation into the death threats after a letter targeting presenter Michael Christian was seized, warning him there were "bullets out there with your name on it".

The letter was obtained by Sydney's Daily Telegraph, which said further threats were made involving a shotgun which it said were inappropriate to print.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation said staff at 2Day FM's parent company Southern Cross Austereo have been receiving threats all week.

"Police are conducting an investigation into threats made against two Sydney radio presenters," a New South Wales police spokesperson told AFP.

"Detectives seized a letter which contained a number of threats. Detectives are conducting an investigation into the matter and are attempting to identify the source of the letter."

Southern Cross Austereo could not be reached for comment but the Telegraph said about a dozen staff at the broadcaster have been moved to hotels for their safety and up to 10 executives have been assigned bodyguards.

No suspicious circumstances

Christian and fellow host Mel Greig, who have been undergoing counselling, remain off air and have not been seen in public since making tearful apologies on commercial television on Monday.

It follows the pair posing as Queen Elizabeth II and William's father Prince Charles in a hoax call to the hospital, which sparked an outpouring of global anger against them.

Senior British police officer James Harman told the inquest there were "no suspicious circumstances" surrounding Saldanha's death, indicating that no one else was involved.

"Jacintha Saldanha was found by a colleague and a member of security staff. Sadly she was found hanging. There were also injuries to her wrist," he told Westminster Coroner's Court.

Two notes were found in her room and another was among her possessions, Harman added, without revealing their contents at this preliminary stage.

Police are also looking at telephone calls and emails to see if they shed more light on her death, he said.

Scotland Yard will "in the very near future" be in contact with Australian police to ask them to interview people there, he added.

Investigation

Indian-born Saldanha's husband Benedict Barboza and two teenage children did not attend the short hearing.

The radio station has pledged at least A$500 000 (more than R4.5m) to help the grieving family, although British lawmaker Keith Vaz, who has been acting as their spokesperson, said the broadcaster had not done enough.

The royal couple, who are expecting their first child, have said they at no stage complained to the hospital about the hoax call incident. The hospital has also said that it gave Saldanha its full support.

Australia's media watchdog on Thursday opened an investigation into the prank call to determine whether it breached standards of decency, invaded privacy or contravened the Commercial Radio Codes of Practice.

Let be realistic.

Radio stations  make prank calls all over the world whole day. How on earth would they be able to predict a person would suicide?

I got my views on the person that suicided, but i will keep those views to myself.  Claiming that their radio license should be suspended is just ridiculous.

All PMs saying "Look at my unban request!!11" will be ignored.

In need of assistance? Please send me a forum PM instead of contacting me ingame. Whenever i am ingame, i'm most likely busy with something else which means i wont be able to help you there and then.

I've never heard a radio station making a prank call..

But yes sure, they didn't know the women would commit suicide because of it, and I'm sure if they did they'd not have made the prank call.

Radio stations make prank calls very often, it attracts listeners.

Nobody could of possibly, in any light of foreseen that a person who took a call and passed it on would commit suicidie over it. There has to be other factors that drove her to this and this was just the final straw for her, the thing that made her snap.

Threatening to kill them over this is outright stupid.

Actually this is finally the escalation expected in the prank calls made.
It is easy to accuse the person who comitted suicide here, but fact is that this is how bullying and harassing other people works.
It is great fun for those who do it, until the moment they get confronted with the results of their actions. Then they suddenly never meant to do it and try to show that the person who got hurt was 'weak' and 'having problems' already.

Making jokes that hurt others is only for weak people. I have heard many great prank calls that would make the people they pranked laugh when they understood. And I have unfortunately seen many more bad examples where the idea of the prank is to humiliate and hurt others, getting a laugh at their expense.

For me humour that goes at the expense of others is not funny. If you want to show a mirror of something so bad its funny, use your own image.

MI6 *reloads his sniper*

Seriously, I'm unsure if the nurse knew what the royal family sound like but to me it is pretty obvious that it was a fake very bad British accent attempt.

Always the problem with prank calls is you cannot see the person on the other end, unlike if it is face to face comedy. They always have an element of risk, which in a way makes it entertaining for listeners. This was just one which turned out terribly wrong.

Something of this extent was bound to turn out bad.

What I find actually lame is, on most international radios, prank calls are made, and the person the prank was played on, is usually never told about it.

We have several radio stations in my city which make prank calls to people, but in the end, they always reveal to the person that they were being pranked and they're on the radio. Fun for everybody!

She forwarded the call on, and I doubt she was left alone for doing that, even though they say the royal family never laid complaints.

The nurse must have had other stress related problems, and what people have said is right, the radio station has to be held responsible.
