He should have, or he should have followed the river Tems like most helicopters do to avoid collisions, but the crane having a lack of lights could also be as fault.
Is there proof it wasn't lighted ?

BBC News said 'There will be an investigation into wether the crane was lit well enough' - So we will find out, it's just what I assumed.
It did not appear to be lit well on the footage BBC News showed from their news helicopter.

There are regulations on it so the company could be sued

I can see a crane from my house roof thats all the way in the docks about 2 miles away, so it could be the cranes fault if it wasn't lit well enough, however the pilot really shouldn't have been flying so close to the building thats under construction and he should have followed the tems, but I believe it's a whole line of incidents that lead to the crash itself, such as fog, badly lit crane, pilot flying too close to buildings or maybe even miss-information from GPS or ATC.

This is exactly like flying in GTA: SA in dense fog/sandstorm conditions.....

/jokesoff

Still, this is horrible. I'm wondering if this could happen to me because I live less than a mile from my county's airstrip. Every 20 minutes, a Cessna or a helicopter flies over my house at low altitude due to airport approach or takeoff.

Driving each day like it's Burnout 3...

Being so close to the airport I doubt you have anything to worry about, most pilots making an emergancy landing always make the airstrip if they're close by.

No no, it was an emergency landing AFTER he hit the crane, it was going to be an emergency landing because of the fog, but he ended up crashing.
