Would be interesting to know how the number of page impressions of news sites like spiegel online etc. would decrease when they would be removed from google news site ( because i dont believe google would pay for ) .

It would probably be difficult to make them pay for something they are essentially putting on free web space. People are accessing it for free, they are normally not selling it, and as far as I know they're not plagiarising.

True, Google is just quoting which is something i consider fair use.
Technically speaking, unless there is something on the website specifically prohibiting quoting information, it would fall under both fair use and public domain. :P
