Desktops are not better than laptops, as laptops are not better than desktops.

You can only compare certain elements of each, such as portability, upgradibility, specifications, price, etc.

It depends what you need.

If you need something that you want to have the freedom of taking it wherever you go, obviously a laptop is more suitable.

For gaming, desktops are generally more suitable as they have more power and generally perform better.

However, if you want something for gaming as well as portability, then you are going to have to pay a significant amount for a high-end laptop, which are more difficult and expensive to upgrade.

You have to ask yourself some questions before choosing between a laptop or desktop PC, such as:
- What do you need it for (gaming, travel, both)?
- What do you want to get out of it?
- How much are you willing to spend?
- Do you want to upgrade it in the future?

Another thing is that I have yet to see a laptop make it past the 2 year mark with my use (12-15 hours daily), while desktops can take that without problem.
That is true, mine stopped working after approximately 2 years. Motherboard issue as far as I know. Ended up getting a desktop because I barely took my laptop anywhere. My phone can pretty much do anything that I used my laptop for when I travelled anyway.

The laptop in our household was purchased somewhere in 2006, just when Windows Vista came out. Very low specifications, very slow, gets very hot, but after all these years it still operates without having to do any hardware related fixes. Only thing I did to it once was dust it off inside, and that's two years ago by now.

It wasn't a very expensive machine at the time, 600 euros or so.

But how many hours a day do you use it ?  ;)

In many cases laptops are built for 'managers' who will use it 2 to 3 hours a day maximum. Used as intended, they will last a long time.

My mother is the only one that's been using it a lot over the years, until recently. The old chap's been replaced by a new Lenovo. :D

I don't think it was used for longer than 3 hours a day, but it's definitely been on, idling for more than 3 hours.

Not necessarily. I used my old Macbook on average 5-9 hours daily for 5 years before I ended up replacing it with a newer Macbook. It just depends on the build quality of the laptop. I remember in early Vista days HP created laptops that had a graphic card issue that would basically burn out and fried cause they were soldered wrong. There was some lawsuit against them where people one original price of the laptop.

The one with 20-40FPS in Crysis 3?   :conf:

Maybe you should actually open your eyes because there's plenty of desktops that will (a lot more that 'just slightly') outperform your laptop for half the price. I bet my rig would outperform it as soon as I insert the two GTX470s I have lying around in SLI. I didn't pay more than 600 for all the parts. Most are secondhand, but still.
Yes.

I agree, but I like portability.  :devroll: Like I can take my laptop anywhereeeeeeeeeeeeee. Right now I am typing this with lappy on the knees. :p Something people with desktops cant do.

MacBooks, like most high-end laptops, have a great build quality.

I made the mistake of buying the infamous HP Pavilion a few years ago. Lesson learnt: never bought a low-end laptop again.

I currently have an HP Envy 15, which I really like. It is mostly made out of aluminium, but still has some plastic parts. Heats up really quick though, but I don't play games on it anyway.

As many have mentioned, it's completely up to what you need out of your computer.

If you need great performance but don't move around alot (and when you do, you intend to stay at that location a longer time), then investing in a
desktop is the better choose, since you could invest in one of those fancy desktop backpacks (but forget it if you have a bad spine and muscle).

If you need portability, it's laptops hands down.

If you need performance and portability, do prepare to be able to pay huge sums of money for it (no not the AlienWare Shit, stop buying that overpriced crap).

Desktops will always beat a laptop when it comes to performance, no matter what the time or technology. Simply because a desktop allows for more space to place components.
Even when the day comes whereas we will be operating on atom-levels of microchips (imagine todays CPU size, at the size of atoms), the desktop will still win, since more space available to build on.

Life has been a fucking hell recently, including accepting what has happened to me in the past. Dunno if life will ever get better but at the least I'm still hanging on. Lol.

As if I have no good desktop currently, plus I am on vacations, My Lenovo G550 (Which I bought for only 200 Euros), serves me very good for both gaming and browsing/entertainment/movies.. I just added another pair of ram, making it 4GB of DDR3 which costed me 8 more euros, and for 208 Euros, this is a very good laptop.. Runs GTA:SA easily, even League of Legends at average 55-60FPS :)

Desktops: Performance.

If it is for Business purpose , I prefer a Laptop.

And for gaming or home use , desktop is best.

I do agree with you. It's the same way for me.
