Teenager Holding on to iPad Gets Run Over by Thieves in SUV in Las Vegas

A teenager walking down a street in Las Vegas with an iPad was mugged by two men who jumped out of an SUV and as they fled, they ran him over as held on to the device.

Marcos Arenas, 15, died Thursday as he struggled with the two thieves' in an attempt to keep his tablet.

The two men, who have been booked in jail, ran over Arenas as they tried to get away and he wouldn't let go of the iPad, according to the Las Vegas Sun.

Police investigators told the newspaper that the suspect dragged the teen, who tried to hold onto the device, back toward the car.

Police believe the suspect re-entered the passenger side of the car, which sped off with Arenas either still holding onto the iPad, or being held by the suspect. As the car picked up speed, Arenas fell and they ran him over. He later died at a local hospital.

According to the Associated Press, the two men charged are Jacob Dismont, 18, and Michael Solid, 21. They were booked Saturday into the Clark County jail on charges of open murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

The teen's family mourns over their loss. Ivan Arenas said he bought the iPad for his son less than two months ago. The family has never had a lot, the father said, and his son valued everything he had.

"For him to lose his life over an iPad, it's just not fair," Ivan Arenas told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "Never in my life would I imagine that me buying my kid an iPad for his birthday would end up with him getting run over."

A police spokesman told CBS affiliate KLAS that there has been a recent increase in thefts of Apple products in the Las Vegas area. There has been a growing crime trend around the nation which has now been dubbed "Apple Picking" where tons of iPhones, iPads and MacBooks are being stolen daily.

I never understood those kind of news, does it really matter that it was an iPad? Would it have been differently if he was holding a Samsung tablet?

Basically its about how he gave up his life but not his precious iPad. #FirstWorldProblems

Just go into an Apple store and rob one, no need to kill an innocent person for that. Not saying that I agree with robbery but to kill someone for greed is just pathetic. I hope justice is served.
