Happens everytime I try to add a new contact. Tried formatting the device, desyncing all apps, deleting whatsapp etc. I don't have hotmail/outlook.

Android 2.3.6

Is it stock firmware or a custom one? Rooted or not?

It came with 2.3.5, was later upgrated to 2.3.6. Everything is stock.
