Seems like I'm not able to connect anymore. It was working fine 2 days ago and now it says my password is wrong and I can't register a new account because there is already one on my IP.. so I'm stuck!

I myself haven't crashed at all during the past few days other than when excessively Alt+Tabbing out and back in from the game.
Most likely there is something twerky about your game/IV:MP installation.

It comes down to game mods whether you're crashing often or every so often, it's apparent that the client and game itself isn't too stable if you have changed certain game files.

i was able to reduce the crashes to a minimum with changing all exe files to win98 compatibilty mode. it brings a little soundbug with it and less framerate but its more stable as without. especially the random crashes direct after joining the server are gone.

This method i have discovered works very well, except for the performance decrease. Never expierenced a crash ever since.

There seems to be an issue with a matching serial (most likely a bug). Cyril has created your account though, which will hopefully avoid this check.
