Post by: Clooak on January 08, 2009, 06:59:23 pm

IM just curious if anyone had tried out the new Windows 7 (beta) yet? If so what do you think about it so far? :)

For those who wounder where you can get it, it's available through MSDN and maybe Technet not sure

I haven't yet tried it but will as soon as i get my pc back :) Looks pretty amazing and ive heard they have reduced the startup time to about 15 seconds

I got the pre-beta I think and it works fine for me. With Vista I had some problems running SA, but now it runs good. Also with starting programs I think it's fast. The only thing I got problems with is shutting off the computer after a program crashed.

Does it startup as fast as they say? Im gonna install it as soon as i get my pc back from HP which will be in another 8 days or so :)
They are gonna release some beta keys for those who havent a MSDN nor a Technet account tonight. So be alert only 2,5 million keys will be released

Starting up is faster then XP for me, but note that I don't have that much installed as I had on XP. I always use the sleepmode and that seems to be quicker too.

Windows 7 Isn't really bad, My impression it goes faster than Vista, Sidebar is gone,
New Background and themes assignment and such..

Also very stable... I expected worse but in my opinion it's going good with Windows 7...

Keep in Mind that downloading windows 7 Is NOT allowed (so don't start posting links)

The public beta has NOT reached 2.5 million downloads.  But so many people started downloading it that they took it down temporarily.  Here is the official announcement from Microsoft I read.

Quote from: Joe Shonk (Microsoft MVP) & Windows Live 7 Team Blog
"Due to very heavy traffic we’re seeing as a result of interest in the Windows 7 Beta, we are adding some additional infrastructure support to the Microsoft.com properties before we post the public beta. We want to ensure customers have the best possible experience when downloading the beta, and I’ll be posting here again soon once the beta goes live. Stay tuned! We are excited that you are excited!"

If you look at the Windows 7 Team Blog: http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/default.aspx
(The link took me about 5 minutes to load, probably because their servers are getting packed)
(Screenie Posted, See Below)
When I tried to click on the post link in the screenie for more information the first time I got a msg saying, "Server Too Busy" & second time it was taking a long time to load so I just closed it out

Also:
Keep in Mind that downloading windows 7 Is NOT allowed (so don't start posting links)

What Are You Talking About?  :trust:

Why would Microsoft let out a download if it wasn't allowed?

Unless you are talking about a download from certain non-microsoft sites.

It downloaded fine for me.

I'm burning it to a disk atm and backing up some files to install Win7 to a separate disk so I can boot XP or 7 :P

EDIT:  I finished burning it with Nero & when I insert it and autorun or manually run the setup.exe it gives me an error.  I downloaded the 32bit version there.

The download works allright no worries. It must be something wrong with either your connection or something else.

Note that you shall install the updates provided somewhere on some page,
There was some problem with mp3 corruption which they have a fix for already.
Dunno if release comes with this fix, Can anyone confirm whether it is the one with a fix or not?

The mp3 fix doesn't come with it.  I found it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961367 (Download link is on the page)

It's not my connection, everything else works completely fine, I tired using:

Google Chrome = Bring me to page doesn't exist, and doesn't dl at all
Internet Exploer & Firefox = Downloads like 250mb then it the completed bar thing jumps to completed, it says it's copying.  And it only downloaded 250mb or so but it says it's done...

It might be because of there servers, all the normal official pages (non-direct-link)  say to wait for them to add more servers..

At the top of the Gadgets thing on the right, there is a + sign, click on that and it will bring a see through window, in the bottom right corner of that window there is 'get more gadgets online' or something similar.

Click on this then search in the box 'CPU' or whatever you want and you'll find it  :)

ok so youre all using your standard downloaders with Firefox and IE...
Im downloading using a download manager which can boost the download speed and also make it possible to "Pause" and "Resume' the download and right now ive downloaded the whole 2.497Gb of the 32Bit.. and now im busy downloading the 64Bit aswell...  ;)
The program ive used is a simple one called "Free Download Manager" and it works like a bomb..

EDIT: I thought you would need the WMP Updates so heres the links for the 32Bit Windows 7 and 64Bit Windows 7...

Madboi_Seville, This version is a stable one thats why everyone is downloading. Microsoft made sure that it would work as good as possible before they released it

Free download manager can never boost your download thats just complete bullshit :) Unless they change some parameters (which you can do yourself)
Though the download managers out there might be good cus they can pause and resume, but I guess firefox can do that aswell?

I just tried the 86bits link and I could download at a speed of 1400 kB/s without any interuptions :)

here you are right... MS's mission is give everybody a DVD-box with disc with Windows 7 Beta and license key :)

and really I found where keys are, but I cannot get them. Somebody said that if you would refresh this page for 30 minutes, server would give you Key.

1. Go to TechNet Main Page and click "Log In" (right top corner)
2. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/gcs.aspx?Product=tn-win7-64-ww&LCID=1033 to get 64-bit (x64) key
or to https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/gcs.aspx?Product=tn-win7-64-ww&LCID=1033 to get 32-bit (x86) key.

You'll be redirected to page named "7 Beta 32-bit" or "7 Beta 64-bit". You'll see error there, but somebody say if you'd refresh this page for 30 minutes, you'll get this Key.

Good luck! and have fun experimenting!

It works now and i'm downloading it via the official pages.

It probably wasn't working correctly yesterday because we weren't supposed to be able to even download it when they closed it down...

Also, it wouldn't be the web browsers fault.  If anything a download manager might make it worse.  And also, why would Microsoft release something that is hard to even download on I.E?  :P

I'm downloading it now with no problems from Microsoft.

Used download manager, but there was one problem: I couldn't start download with FF, i used IE7 and worked.
Now i will get Partition Magic 8.0 from my friend, make new partition and install it.
Of course, i won't forget backing up my own files!

Haha oh wow.
I spent 5 hours trying to find a partition program. I partitioned 26gb for Windows 7. I installed it. I can now dual-boot onto either one.

I only have one thing to say...
Shittest OS ever.

Screen resolution won't change
Can't use Chrome
MSN won't work
G15 Keyboard wasn't working (fixed)
SAMP won't work
Windows Media Player is all messed up.
The "Superbar" thing is stupid, it won't let me change some things

Ugh, overall horrible. Once they fix it up a bit (A LOT), i'll boot windows 7 again, but until then..

Install drivers? Just run Windows update and almost all drivers will be installed. The only driver I had to download was for my built-in webcam, I used a Vista driver and it works fine.

I got original XP drivers working on Windows 7 and internet is working!
Now gonna test out if SA:MP working...

Friend says it has the same bugs as Vista did, although it's only beta.

What kind of bugs?

Haha oh wow.
I spent 5 hours trying to find a partition program. I partitioned 26gb for Windows 7. I installed it. I can now dual-boot onto either one.

I only have one thing to say...
Shittest OS ever.

Screen resolution won't change
Can't use Chrome
MSN won't work
G15 Keyboard wasn't working (fixed)
SAMP won't work
Windows Media Player is all messed up.
The "Superbar" thing is stupid, it won't let me change some things

Ugh, overall horrible. Once they fix it up a bit (A LOT), i'll boot windows 7 again, but until then..

I assume you haven't even installed the latest patch? or else your doing something wrong
Do you actually believe that msn wont work? HAHA! "Screen resolution won't change" What about you try go and changing it? I doubt anything will happen by automatic(kidding)
What kind of resolution are you trying to use?
It's not a shitty OS it's fast as hell and everything runs smooth. Well done Microsoft!

I can't say anything negative about it

Screen resolution can be changed.
Haven't tested Chrome.
MSN works!
Haven't tested SAMP.
WMP works, not messed up!
Superbar? Haven't tested..

SA:MP works too, only when shutting down it gives an error (like we had before)

I'm really happy now, I got an official beta key now. So I'm gonna download the beta and install this one instead of the pre beta version.

I've had Vista for 6 months now. Never experienced any kind of BUG. And the only "negative thing Vista did for me" was not letting me play my 1996 games. CUZ DEY 2 OLD FO ITZ YO. No glitches, no bugs. Just some compability problems. With games older than me.

I'm gonna dl Windows 7 beta sometime in the week I think. After I'm finished with some late school work

It's called a Beta.

Haven't tried it yet personally, but am willing to do so in nearest future. And what I've read from users who actually know something about computers, Windows 7 sure does sound very promising. :)

I don't know, just saying what he told me. I don't use vista nor do I intend to use vista, I'll stay with XP untill something just as stable comes out.

Some XP drivers / Vista drivers stil work on Windows 7.. otherwise Windows should be able to get generic drivers which will operate well...

Mr. Hilarious insulter

Haha, did you seriously expect it to work like a charm right away?

If you are too stubborn to understand what the word "Beta" means and that it might require you to sacrifice some time to examine and solve the possible problems, I would suggest you to not take part to the Windows 7 Beta testing, since the real problem most likely is between the chair and the computer.

As your Beta experience was obviously enough for you to be able to judge Windows 7 as the "Shittest OS ever.", better make sure you won't ever have it in any of your computers. ;)

The official public Beta is available from Microsoft until 24/01/2009. The original 2.5 million key limitation is no longer valid.

Check this link for the download and Beta product keys:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx)

:ps: I strongly recommend the 64-bit edition if your processor has support for 64-bit.

Does Core 2 Duo work 64-bit?
Title: Re: Tried out the new Windows 7?

Does Core 2 Duo work 64-bit?

Yes. You can find 64-bit support on:
AMD: Athlon 64, Opteron, Sempron, Turion 64 and Phenom processors
Intel: Newer Celeron, Pentium 4, Pentium D, Xeon, Core 2, and Core i7 processors

If you have an older Celeron or Pentium 4 processor (like I do), it might not have 64-bit support and therefore the 32-bit version of Windows 7 is unfortunately left as your only option.

Is it easy to switch from 32-bit version to 64-bit version, without problems?
Is it possible so i don't lose my files?

It is not possible to update your Windows from 32-bit to a 64-bit one and vice versa. You need to install Windows again, but of course you can install it on another partition so that your old files won't get lost.

But if I were you, I would back my files up on on a USB-memory stick or external hard drive, reformat the whole hard drive and install Windows on a clean hard drive.

Windows 7 is still on beta, meaning it's not even officially out, hence you can't call it stable, yet.
When Windows 7 comes out "for real" I don't see a problem in getting it.

You cannot upgrade from XP to Windows 7.
Top upgrade, you need Vista SP1, else you need to install it to other partition or format your HDD.

Damn, Windows 7 rocks lot!
Now i got access to Windows XP drive, i don't wanna return to XP anymore...

I would reccomend you buy a new PC when Windows 7 fully comes out, with Win 7 Pre-Installed, I'm going to do it.

Also understand that Windows 7 Beta wasen't made to test games, So if games don't work, don't worry, they will properly fix it all in the full release.

I have installed Windows 7 on Virtual PC, its alright, but lags a bit since I only have 1GB of ram, but otherwise, Its looks nice.

I want to install windows 7, I want to know how and what I need.

I only have one Harddrive and Windows Vista SP1 is installed on it. I would like to take off 50gb of the HDD and use it for windows 7, how do I do that?

And how do I do dual boot?

Is the beta forever free? Or only free till the real version is out?

demmit ... Vista sucks
Don't bash an OS you don't even own. It does not suck. I own both XP and Vista, and run both on my computer and my mom's. Vista is awesome. You may not like it because of some issues that are constantly being fixed by Microsoft, but get over it. XP had the same problems when it first came out and now it's just about the most stable OS on the planet.
And to make you look more ridiculous in that basher comment, just to let you know, Windows 7 is an upgraded version of Windows Vista. It is not another rewrite like Vista. It's actually just a visual upgrade of the Vista core with a few tweaks and added features.

Windows 7 BETA key expires on 1st August 2009, after that stop using Win7Beta or buy more(not sure).
Use some boot CD, Ubuntu Linux for example, to make new partition.
Dual-boot is easy, just install Windows 7 to other partition, system is smart and let's you to select between OS(es).

Once again, quit OS bashing people! Comments, discussions, opinions, and debates are okay, but when you go and say something sucks just because it didn't work out for YOU the way YOU wanted it to, that's just too much...
