1980s (mid): Alphanumeric display pagers were introduced. They could send a text message through a digital network and initiate in a variety of ways, including operator dispatch, IXO (a device used for sending alphanumeric pages via Telelocator Alphanumeric Protocol (TAP)), and computer.

Motorola OPTRX is an Alphanumeric Pager released by Motorola in 1984.

What about having Pagers, where we can send small text messages to players who are either online/offline?

The text messages could be limited to certain amount of characters for realism.

A player can send a message using a command, for example /page <name> <msg>

A player can check their messages /pager. This will list any unread messages. Once a message is received, it is deleted automatically.

What do you think?

Interesting idea.
However I think it should also include a /me command such as "Steve's pager rings!" and "Klaus used his pager." or something like that.

That is a pretty great idea.
I don't know if it'll be possible to send to offline players, though. Also that might lead to memory load in some cases.

To add to the quality of the command, as an addition to Danigold's suggestion, we can have that pager sound which is in the audio folder to be heard by the one who receives the message. Also it'll be great to log atleast 10 messages (sort of a memory chip, yes).

Pagers were in GTA III and worked well enough, I can see the same thing happening here in VC:MP.

And I'd suggest the exact same thing as Dani to go with it.

Supported.

lolwhat

These could easily just be saved to database and only load on command.

I like the idea of being able to leave messages for offline people, but these should not be anonymous in any way. It should always say who sent the message.

How can the script do something ... if it crashes?

If you quit normally everything is saved.
