Those 1.8 engines are actually perform quite well and are rather strong, that is if it has been maintained correctly throughout its life.

I've heard that I can join with my parents as a third driver in terms of insurance, will this affect their record as in if I claim or something?

If you are added as a driver on their insurance policy, yes. All that is doing is allowing you to utilize their insurance that is applied to their vehicles. If you get your own, separate policy, however, that would be a completely different story.

Yes, my own vehicle but registered with them as a third driver. My parents haven't claimed for 10 years+ and I hope it doesn't effect them.

You as a third driver, under a certain age limit, not having a license for a certain amount of years it will be cheaper to be as a third driver.
The catch comes in if you claim, if you are in an accident there will be a far higher excess than if your parents were in an accident due to you being the third driver, and your age.

And by claiming, it will boost their premium too.

Exactly what Devin said. Be sure to be extra cautious on the road. If you live in the United States, depending on your state, also try to take any Driver's Education or Driver's Training programs offered to you, (if you are still eligible and haven't already). Insurance companies often will give even lower rates with the more training and experience you have when you're younger, even if you make claims. It also helps give you practice to protect yourself from other bad drivers on the road. (And trust me, there's tons of them. :P )
